Mystery about 15 fans after Kansas City’s cold, historic playoff game with the Dolphins
The Chiefs chilly playoff victory over the Dolphins saw quite a few fans gets hospitalized due to the cold conditions.
The Kansas City Chiefs picked up a 26-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins in their Wild Card matchup, and they did so despite the historically cold conditions that rolled in for the game. Tens of thousands of fans gutted it out and decided to attend the game despite the sub-zero temperatures, and it apparently led to quite a few fans having to go to the hospital as a result.
At kickoff, the temperature at Arrowhead Stadium sat at -4 degrees, with the wind chill coming in at around -30 degrees. When you consider that there were tons of fans sitting up in the nosebleeds, it was likely even colder for them, which is crazy to think about. The low temperatures led to 15 fans getting hospitalized, with seven of those cases being due to hypothermia, and three being due to frostbite.
“A Kansas City Fire Department spokesperson said the agency handled 69 calls at Arrowhead Stadium as the Chiefs took on the Miami Dolphins amid subzero temperatures. KCFD said approximately half of those calls were hypothermia related. Of the nearly 70 calls KC first responders received at Arrowhead, 15 people were transported to a local hospital. Seven of those transported were for hypothermia, and three were for frostbite.” – Makenzie Koch, FOX4
Chiefs fans sacrificed their own well-being to watch their favorite team
Chiefs fans are pretty passionate when it comes to supporting their team, but this might be taking things to another level. Obviously, the well-being of these fans is the most important piece of the puzzle, but by simply attending this game, fans were taking a risk. For a select few, it ended up being a risk that resulted in a trip to the hospital.
Once these fans warm back up, they will be able to turn their attention to the Chiefs upcoming Divisional round matchup against the Buffalo Bills. This game won’t be in Kansas City, so many fans won’t have the opportunity to go out and freeze their tails off for this one. Still, you can bet they will be supporting their team from home, but hopefully it won’t result in as many hospitalizations as this game caused.
