“I think it allowed my dad to explore a more melodic style of songwriting and there’s great stuff on here.”

Wolfgang Van Halen Weighs in on Sammy Hagar vs. Dave Lee Roth Debate, Names Album That Helped Him 'Through a Really Dark Time'

Recently, Wolfgang Van Halen took part in an Amoeba Music “What’s In My Bag?” segment – in which renowned musicians saunter through the music store, select some of their favorite albums, and discuss each. One of WVH’s picks was the recently issued Van Halen: “The Collection II” 5-LP box set, which collects all 4 “Van Hagar” studio albums, as well as an extra disc of studio rarities. While discussing the set, he touched upon the whole Sammy Hagar vs. David Lee Roth debate and shared his thoughts (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar).

“Not to delve into the exhausting argument of which singer is better, I’m kind of ‘of the mind’ where there’s positives in everything. And if you hate one side or the other, it’s like, ‘Hey, the same guy wrote this stuff.’ You can really find stuff to appreciate. And I really appreciate the melodic addition that Sammy added to the band with this music. I think it allowed my dad to explore a more melodic style of songwriting and there’s great stuff on here.”

Additionally, he selected The Beatles’ penultimate studio album, “Abbey Road,” as an all-time favorite and explained how the 1969 album holds a special place in his heart for a personal reason.

“This album helped me through a really dark time – which I’m sure is probably dumb to say, because I think everybody has probably said that at some point. But I think that is just a testament to how great the album is. I think ‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’ is – for the time – one of the heaviest songs ever. ‘Heavy’ is in the title, but I just love that was like, metal before metal kind of. And I just think it’s such a heavy, awesome song.

Lastly, WVH revealed who his favorite Beatle is. “‘Here Comes the Sun’ was the song we had played on the piano right when my wife and I got married. George [Harrison] is my favorite Beatle – I don’t think he’s everybody’s favorite, but he’s my favorite. And ‘Here Comes the Sun’ is his song, and it’s one of their biggest songs. I think that’s just kind of cool.”

Wolfgang issued his sophomore album last year, “Mammoth II.”
