Rory McIlroy breathtakingly won the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament, thereby increasing his PGA Tour collection to 19.
“This is a great place for me,” Rory McIlroy smiled happily when becoming the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship champion, at Quail Hollow Club, in North Carolina (USA).
Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for the third time
“Since I first set foot on this golf course, I’ve really loved it, and that love has been reciprocated. I’ve often played well here over the years.”
This is the third time in McIlroy’s career he has lifted the championship title at Quail Hollow Club – a professional golf tournament established in 2003, with 71 par.
McIlroy’s first victory came in 2010, when he defeated Phil Mickelson. In 2015, he won the championship for the second time, with a record score of -21.
In this third coronation, McIlroy won -10.
McIlroy started Wells Fargo not really well, with a 72 in the first round. In the following rounds, his achievements were 66, 68 and 68 strokes respectively.
Before the final day, Keith Mitchell led with a score of -9. However, he shot 72 in the final round, falling to group T3.
Abraham Ancer shot 66 in round 4, but his total score was -9, becoming runner-up behind McIlroy.
Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland finished the competition, having the same score of -8 with Keith Mitchell, sharing 3rd place.
Crowned at Wells Fargo, McIlroy ended nearly 2 years without winning a PGA Tour title, since the WGC-HSBC Champions in early November 2019. A total of 553 days.
The Northern Irish golfer also increased his PGA Tour collection to 19.
At the age of 32 (his birthday was on May 4), Rors – McIlroy’s nickname – rose strongly to head towards a new cycle of victories.
This victory helps McIlroy confidently prepare for the PGA Championship (May 20-23) – 1 of the 4 majors, the tournament he won in 2012 and 2014.
