“We are developing two ‘Pirates’ scripts”: Disney Reportedly Has a Backup Plan if Margot Robbie Refused to Replace Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Disney has confirmed that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is currently in development. The popular franchise has been on a lengthy hiatus since its last entry, but it seems almost certain that a new film is in the works. The announcement of the extension of the Pirates of the Caribbean series was made in 2018, but due to controversies surrounding Johnny Depp, the project was put on hold. All five previous films have featured the 60-year-old actor in the iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
This summer, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Disney is working on a new script for Pirates of the Caribbean. The interesting twist? The film will not feature Johnny Depp.
There have been rumors suggesting that Margot Robbie may take over the lead role. However, Margot Robbie confirmed in a Vanity Fair cover story that the original script written for her has now been discontinued. In a recent interview with Variety, the film’s producer shed some light on the situation, stating that while the script developed for Robbie has been put on hold, they are currently focusing on another script for the next film.
Fans might be wondering if Johnny Depp’s script got lost in the shuffle, but it appears that the original Captain Jack Sparrow has been left out of both script options. Bruckheimer confirmed this in a previous interview, stating that they are exploring two different scripts—one with Margot Robbie and one without. As of now, it seems that Disney is moving forward with the script that does not feature Robbie.
This decision is reportedly due to his treatment during the Amber Heard controversy. Despite this, Depp has expressed openness to the idea of returning to the role of Jack Sparrow and collaborating with Disney once more. Only time will tell what lies ahead for the upcoming installment of Pirates of the Caribbean.
