Kelly Clarkson Wants to Re-Record ‘Better-with-Age’ Versions of Early Hits Like ‘Miss Independent’
“It’s just, young Kelly is so fresh, right? And it’s not good. It’s green,” Clarkson tells PEOPLE of her vocal quality on early-career songs
Kelly Clarkson looks back on her early songs with a critical eye.
The 41-year-old pop superstar opened up to PEOPLE about how she’d like to re-record “better-with-age” versions of some of her early hits at SiriusXM’s Next Generation Industry & Press Preview event in New York City on Wednesday.
During the event, the American Idol alum announced her new, year-round SiriusXM channel Kelly Clarkson Connection, on which she’ll play a curated selection of music by her favorite artists, as well as her own songs.
When it comes to featuring material from her catalog, however, there are some tracks she doesn’t want to play — but not because she doesn’t like the songs.
“Well, I think the banned ones are only because I don’t like how I sound,” Clarkson tells PEOPLE.
Before Taylor Swift began re-recording new versions of her albums in order to fully own the projects, some fans may remember when Clarkson suggested the idea via X (formerly Twitter) in 2019. Now, the “Since U Been Gone” singer considering following in Swift’s footsteps, but not for the same reasons.
“I don’t really want to re-record to own it. Some things I do want to kind of re-record because I think I’m better with age, vocally,” she says, citing 2003’s “Miss Independent” as an example. “It’s just, young Kelly is so fresh, right? And it’s not good. It’s green.”
Kelly Clarkson to Host and Perform at This Year’s ‘Christmas in Rockefeller Center’ Holiday Special
Fans shouldn’t worry: Clarkson is still going to play “Miss Independent” on her SiriusXM station, which launched Wednesday, “but I think there’s also elements of this channel that allow me the freedom to give people a better-with-age version, and then also maybe play some of Kellyokes that people love from the show.”
Kelly Clarkson Connection will also feature some of her listeners’ favorite lesser-known songs from throughout her career — including a particular deep cut from 2007’s My December album.
“‘Sober’ is a fan favorite. I know all the ones the fans want to hear, and they’re gonna be the ones listening,” says Clarkson. “I listen to everybody, and so we’ll play the deep cuts and the hits.”
Upon the channel’s launch, SiriusXM’s president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein issued a statement about why Clarkson was chosen to have her own year-round programming.
“Kelly Clarkson has captivated millions of fans through her music in her decades-long career and has become a friendly face serving up a dose of entertainment and pop-culture to viewers through her popular daytime television talk show,” said Greenstein. “It feels only natural to expand her world for her fans with her own daily audio experience that only she can create with her own channel, Kelly Clarkson Connection.”
