Amazing! Johnny Depp Unveils His Debut Self-Portrait, Titled ‘Five’: ‘Not the Most Comfortable Thing’!
Renowned actor Johnny Depp has returned to the art scene with a brand new self-portrait. “Five,” as the painting is titled, was unveiled by Castle Fine Art on Thursday and will be available for sale for a limited period of 13 days. This number holds significance for the 60-year-old artist, according to a press release.
The artwork is created in the same style as Depp’s previous “Friends and Heroes” art series. It draws inspiration from a photograph taken by Depp himself during a Christian Dior Perfumes photoshoot in collaboration with photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino in 2015. In a video interview, Depp explained that he painted the self-portrait in 2021 at illustrator Ralph Steadman’s studio. He wanted to add more depth to the piece, which he felt represented a dark and confusing time in his life. Depp decided to write the number “five” on the painting, symbolizing the fifth year of the challenges he was experiencing.
The press release mentions that creating the self-portrait served as a means of creative healing for Depp in 2021. He returned to the project earlier this year and eventually made the decision to share it with the public. Despite being embroiled in controversy and legal battles, Depp expressed his appreciation for Dior’s continued support over the years. He began collaborating with the brand in 2015 and recently signed a lucrative new deal worth over $20 million in May.
Depp admitted that creating a self-portrait was not an entirely comfortable experience but believed that all artistic endeavors are, in a way, self-portraits. He described the process of sketching himself in front of a mirror, capturing different angles and lighting.
The painting, “Five,” will be available for purchase exclusively on Castle Fine Art’s website starting at 12 p.m. ET. Each print, featuring Depp’s handwritten signature, will be sold with a portion of the proceeds donated to Mental Health America, a nonprofit organization. Depp praised the organization’s work, stating that they deserved the support.
