“These are game managers, they’re not difference-makers,” Newton said on his ‘4th&1 with Cam Newton’ podcast.
“If we’re really going to call a spade a spade, there’s a difference between managers of the game and difference-makers of a game.
“That’s not to say they can’t win the MVP, but it just is what it is.”
In response, FS1 star Bayless and Get Up hosts Kimberley A. Martin and Domonique Foxworth blasted Newton for his hot take.
“He sounds like the people literally tweeting at me from their basement like, ‘Get back in the kitchen’,” Martin said on Get Up.
“Like you are at home, watching me. Like just turn the TV off.
“It just sounds so foolish.”
On FS1’s Undisputed, Bayless ranted: “When he does this podcast or whatever it was, this is just wacky stuff.
In a lengthy response, the former NFL MVP fired back at the personal nature of the criticisms.
“The thing that I have a problem with is…address the point that I made, not me,” Newton said on his podcast.
“And oftentimes that happens in regards of athletes trying to make their point.”
A key issue appears to be the definition and meaning of the term “game manager”, which Newton says is “not a negative connotation.”
“My definition of that managing player is a player who has the ability to make the right play at the right time, protecting the football at all costs…” Newton said.
“When I think about ultimate elite game managers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady.”
Newton added that he was not describing Prescott, Purdy, Tagovailoa and Goff as “not good players.”
He then went on to bash a series of major sports executives as he continued his rant, arguing that he was “not bitter.”
Despite the furious backlash, many NFL fans came to Newton’s defense.
“Our GOAT has spoken, and we’re with you all the way,” one fan said.
“Speak your opinions bro, you’re entitled to all of em. You more than earned the right!” another said.
“These crybabies on these major TV networks literally chose to attack Cam instead of addressing his point,” a third said.
