Nearly 15 years ago, Tiger Woods’ public image – and golf career – collapsed in a spectacular scandal that forever changed the way the world viewed the athlete.

“He still thinks about his sex scandal every day,” said a source close to the golfer.

“It was always there, in the back of his mind. He didn’t like talking about it – or even anything that was going on at that time in his life. It was painful for him. But he persevered and made himself a better man.”

Things turned dark for Woods in 2009.

On the day after Thanksgiving, he crashed his Cadillac Escalade outside his Florida mansion. His then-wife, Elin Nordegren, used two golf clubs to smash the car’s rear window. She told police that she broke the window to help rescue an incoherent Woods from the car, but there was widespread speculation that she broke the window after an argument.

The seemingly small traffic accident caused a wave of controversy. Dozens of women quickly came forward to accuse them of having sexual relationships with the married golfer.

Within months, Woods had lost most of his sponsors and his golf game began to suffer – both due to illness and loss of focus on the course. Before the scandal, he was number one. Golfer ranked number 1 in the world. He dropped sharply in the rankings, reaching an all-time low of #1,199 in December 2017.

“He lost everything,” “And it was really hard for a long time. He actually found out who his friends were. He left a lot of scars.”

But things have improved dramatically for Woods. Multiple surgeries have relieved the pain in his back and legs. He began to display his natural confidence on the golf course.

“It means everything to me. Their love and support, I can’t say enough how much it meant to me throughout the struggle when I was really having trouble moving around around,” he told reporters about his children at the winner’s press conference. “Just the contagion of their happiness; you know, I was going through a tough time physically. . There were a lot of times when I really couldn’t move and it was difficult.”

Woods and Nordegren amicably share custody of their children.

“They really work well together now,” the Woods insider said. “They are all adults and have figured out what’s best for them and for the kids. There’s no real friction and everyone gets along. They went through a very dark time as a family, and although the family looked different, it was happy, stable and prosperous.”

Woods said that injuries and a struggling golf career have enabled him to spend more time with his family.

“I am very fortunate to be given another opportunity to do something I love,” he said. “But more importantly, I was able to participate in my children’s lives in a way that I hadn’t been able to for many years,” he said.

This person close to Woods says he is now focused and energized, with a strong sense of priorities. “He is a completely different person than he was in 2009,” the insider said. “He was an overgrown boy back then. He is a man now.”
