“First Disabled Person to Do So”: When Lewis Hamilton Made His Brother Nicolas Hamilton’s F1 Dream Come True
For someone who is born differently-abled, their life begins with no’s. No, you can’t walk, no, you can’t run, and you definitely can’t race. However, the word ‘no’ is definitely not in the dictionary of the Hamilton family. This is exactly why Lewis Hamilton is not only an F1 driver but he’s one of the best the sport has ever seen. Because of this same outlook, even his brother Nicolas Hamilton, born with cerebral palsy, races in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Moreover, this same outlook, thanks to help from his brother, even saw Nicolas fulfill his Formula 1 dream.
Lewis is an extremely proud brother and shares a strong bond with Nicolas. The pride stems from the fact Nicolas did not let his circumstances limit or stop him from doing what he wanted, a guiding outlook in Lewis’s life as well. This is why Lewis, with the help of Mercedes, helped Nicolas fulfill a dream and become the first ever differently-abled person to get their hands on an F1 simulator. Hamilton put things in motion, and after its fruition, he shared the incredible moment with his brother on Instagram.
Hamilton revealed the process that went into making this dream a reality in the post’s caption. The first half of the caption read, “Earlier this year @nicolashamilton and I asked my team if we could make this day happen and here we are. Time in the sim is incredibly rare, and not something that is accessible for someone like my brother. It took custom modifications to the seat, steering wheel, and pedals to make this possible.”
The second part of the caption revealed the significance of Nicolas’ opportunity, followed by his gratitude. “He spent the whole day in it and is the first disabled person to ever do so. He’s always been a fighter and seeing him have this day is an honour. The smile you see here never left his face. Can’t wait to share more of this special day, thank you @mercedesamgf1 for the time and work put in to make this possible and make my brother’s dream come true.”
Nicolas Hamilton silences his doubters with a powerful comment
Sometimes being associated with someone incredibly popular and rich has its setbacks. One such setback even Nicolas Hamilton faced when he was trying to build his own identity in the racing world. Now, given Lewis has conquered the premier racing competition, there was no way Nicolas could fly under the radar while taking the big step of racing.
However, even after proving his racing mettle and becoming the first differently-abled BTCC driver in the sport’s history, he still had to fight for his identity. This is why, back in 2015, he issued a powerful statement to his doubters and silenced them by revealing the truth.
“Because of my surname and the amount of money Lewis has, people think he is funding me. But it is not the case. Lewis and I are close but when I sit in my car, I want to feel as though I have earned it,” he said. “There are always people around who throw negative comments. But that just makes me want to keep driving as fast as possible. After all. I was told I would never walk. It has made me determined to show what I can. Lewis is the reason I am doing it. I grew up looking to him like you would not believe.”
There is no doubt having a brother as successful and powerful as Lewis in the racing world would’ve helped. In fact, as he mentioned above, Nicolas looks up to his brother. However, we cannot give Lewis all the credit for Nicolas’ achievements or discredit the younger brother’s self-planted feet in the world of racing. For anything more, he always has Lewis helping him fulfill some of his dreams.
