“Huge” album after 7 years of silence
On June 25, 2009, her famous brother and the most influential person in her life, Michael Jackson , passed away. That same year, Janet ended her long-term partnership with producer Jermaine Dupri.
Sharing in the press at that time, Janet admitted that she was very shocked by her brother’s passing. “He is a very important man in my life. Michael not only mentored me but also gave me artistic energy. When he left, I felt really lost ,” the female singer shared in a television interview.
To honor her brother’s memory and free herself from negative emotions, Janet focuses on social and charitable activities around the world. But in return, for the past 7 years, fans have not received any products from the female singer.
Janet’s comeback started with the singer’s unexpected sharing on her personal page last May: “New music product. New world tour. New activities”. Immediately afterwards, Janet revealed the new album’s name is “Unbreakable” and the tour will kick off at the end of the year. She also launched her own record label Rhythm Nation Records to release a new album.
“Unbreakable” is probably the most “massive” album in Janet’s career. With 17 songs, the record is divided into 2 parts. The first part has more of a dance pop sound and the second part is more like an improvisational game. Explaining that, producer Rodney Jerkins shared: “Actually, over the past 7 years, she has still cherished many musical ideas. She just doesn’t have enough spirit and inspiration to go back to the studio to work. But when she overcame the sadness and burdens of the past, she was able to contribute her best to music.”
Remembering Michael Jackson through Janet Jackson https://dep.com.vn/giai-tri/Janet-Jackson-tat-con-gai-cua-Michael-Jackson/12327.dep Can “hear” everything about Janet Jackson on this record. From the excitement of musical inspiration returning in “Burnitup!” vibrant to the U50 woman’s view of love in “Night” . Philosophies about life with “Well Traveled” and of course, confessions about the passing of his brother Michael Jackson through the song “Broken hearts heal”. It seems like everything she had accumulated over the past 7 years has been “released” by the female singer in the album.
Janet Jackson and her brother – late singer Michael Jackson
Janet’s voice is still unmistakable. A sexy mezzo-soprano voice seems to be born to sing catchy R&B or dance and pop songs. In this album, she clearly updated the popular electronic music material. Some are house, some are hip hop or a chillout version of the single “No sleep”. But “Unbreakable” is not limited by genre. Interwoven there is still soul, R&B or even a bit of rock.
Of course, as a popular singer, no matter her age, keeping up with tastes when releasing new products still seems to be a conditioned reflex of Janet Jackson. But compared to another contemporary name, Madonna, she seems more alert. Janet doesn’t go too far in “playing hard to get by” but still maintains her own personality in the way she sings. Therefore, the female singer does not get lost in material that she is not sure she can “download” yet.
Just 10 days after its release, “Unbreakable” rose to number one on the Billboard chart. This is not the first time but the 7th time Janet Jackson has achieved this. But after 7 years of stopping artistic activities, perhaps the female singer herself did not expect that the audience would still accept her this way. The album sold 109 thousand copies, the single “No sleep” sold 44 thousand copies and reached 4 million views of the digital music version.
The success of “Unbreakable” is because Janet has given listeners a good record. As Spin writer Rebecca Haithcoat puts it, Janet Jackson always knows how to surprise us with her music.
