The Beekeeper actor, 31, told Variety in an interview published Monday that Lawrence, 33, sent him a supportive text when his hit movie Five Nights at Freddy’s premiered.
“Jen texted me when Freddy’s came out,” Hutcherson said. “She was like, ‘My movie’s No. 1 on Netflix, and yours is No. 1 at the box office! Let’s go!’ “
“I was like, ‘I love you!’ ” he added of Lawrence, whose raunchy comedy No Hard Feelings dropped on the streaming giant ahead of FNAF‘s October release in theaters.
Lawrence and Hutcherson starred as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, respectively, in the original four-movie blockbuster Hunger Games series that spanned from 2012 to 2015, based on Suzanne Collins’ book series of the same name, and have remained friends since.
Five Nights at Freddy’s marks Hutcherson’s latest theatrical achievement. It is based on the popular video-game series that grew a viral fan base online in recent years, and stars Hutcherson as a security guard who gets a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and realizes the night shift can be deadly.
Despite industry projections estimating an opening weekend in the ballpark of $50 million, the horror film, directed by Emma Tammi, earned $80 million at the domestic box office over its opening weekend in late October, per Variety.
According to Variety, Five Nights at Freddy’s had the second-biggest opening weekend of all time for a video-game adaptation, just behind the $146 million from The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier that year. Five Nights at Freddy’s was also the largest opening weekend for a horror movie in 2023, passing Scream VI‘s $44 million from March.
Additionally, the movie made for the biggest opening weekend for Halloween weekend. Puss in Boots previously held that record with its $34 million back in 2011, per Variety.

Producer Jason Blum — also behind last year’s horror offerings M3GAN and The Exorcist: Believer — posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Five Nights at Freddy’s marked his studio Blumhouse’s biggest opening of all time, and that it broke the record for “biggest opening weekend for a horror film directed by a woman.”
