When Dawn Staley speaks, you listen.
The South Carolina head coach is one of the greatest minds in basketball, carving out an exceptional career as a player and as a coach.
There is a reason why she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
The bottom line: You won’t find a more qualified candidate to discuss women’s basketball greatness — and Staley had high praise for Iowa phenom Caitlin Clark.
The sensational senior guard recently broke the NCAA women’s scoring record, surpassing the career mark previously held by Aces guard and Washington great Kelsey Plum.
Clark has been in the national spotlight for several years, but she is now cementing her status as one of the most talented players in the game while building an astonishing college résumé in the process.
There has been plenty of praise going around about Clark and rightfully so.
Staley got a chance to add her two cents on the topic, and she gave a pretty resounding statement on Clark breaking the record.
“I don’t think that record’s ever going to be broken again,” Staley said Friday.
“I don’t. Like, the clip that she scores, and she’s not done yet. Like, she’s probably got, I don’t know, 15 more games left in the season.
And to do it, probably, 30, 40 points a clip, I mean, what we’re witnessing is something quite incredible.
“I think she’s going to go down in the history books as probably, arguably, the best player to grace our collegiate sport.”
The conversation of who is the greatest women’s collegiate basketball player has been a hot one during Clark’s chase to break Plum’s record.
She has tough competition in the debate, battling with other NCAA greats such as Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, Cheryl Miller and Diana Taurasi.
Nonetheless, if someone of Staley’s caliber is handing out that large of a compliment to you, you know it’s true.
