The year was 1979, and science fiction horror was still a relatively unexplored genre in the world of movies. However, all that changed when ‘Alien’ came out. The iconic Ridley Scott movie took some time to grow on audiences who were still new to the genre. However, it drew in critical acclaim with time and went on to become a commercial success. 44 years have passed since ‘Alien’ took the world by storm, and now, it’s widely considered to be among the masterpieces of the science fiction horror genre. When Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian was a youngster, he fell in love with the movie.

In a recent tweet, Ohanian revealed his love for the hugely influential movie. He also shared how his friends were mostly fans of other franchises, which were just as successful as ‘Alien’.

When ‘Alien’ came out, Star Wars and Star Trek were already two very well-established sci-fi franchises. At the time, most fans of sci-fi movies rated them higher than they did ‘Alien’. According to Ohanian, this made him an outcast among his friends.

In Ohanian’s tweet, he shared another tweet that took a look back at some of the behind-the-scenes moments from the movie. He wrote, “One of my favorites”. Ohanian also went on to write, “Aliens was my favorite of the Aliens universe, but while my friends were geeking out over Star Wars + Star Trek – I was that weird Alien fanboy.”

The immense box-office success of ‘Alien’ resulted in the movie amassing several awards. For starters, it won an Oscar for its incredible visual effects. It also won a Hugo Award and three Saturn Awards, cementing its legacy as a standout movie in the sci-fi horror genre.

Nevertheless, the Reddit cofounder is fond of movies belonging to other genres too.

Ohanian’s love for movies transcends science fiction

It’s no surprise that Ohanian loved sci-fi growing up. After all, it reflected his interest in all things science and technology. However, as he kept growing, his interest in movies went beyond science fiction.

For instance, a few days back, Ohanian shared his thoughts on Steven Spielberg’s 1985 period drama ‘The Color Purple’. According to the tech entrepreneur, the movie deserved an Oscar. However, he is hopeful that its remake, which will hit theaters soon, makes amends for the original’s undeserved loss.
