Mo’Nique Responds To Backlash For Her Comments About Oprah And Tyler Perry
Mo’Nique graced the stage on the Katt Wiliams ‘Dark Matter Tour’ this weekend to apologize to Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.
But it wasn’t exactly the kind of apology they were probably hoping for.
On Saturday (February 10), Mo’Nique performed her comedy set in Albany, New York, when she took a moment to address her critics.
Since her interview on Shannon Sharpe‘s ‘Club Shay Shay‘ dropped earlier this week, the ‘Precious’ star has been making back-to-back headlines. Having expressed her honest thoughts about her feud with the likes of Perry and Winfrey, people like Mathis came forward and criticized Mo’Nique for her remarks.
He believed that speaking her “truth” was subsequently making the black community look bad.
Mo’Nique appeared to have heard what Mathis had to say about her as she stood in front of the cheering crowd and announced her intent to apologize.
However, what followed was less of an apology and more of a statement of defiance. She said:
“I listened to Brother Greg Mathis. I heard you, Brother Greg Mathis. I heard you, Stephen A. Smith. I want y’all to understand something about me. When I have communicated something wrong, I’m a b*tch who’s going to say, ‘I’m sorry.’ I’m a b*tch who’s going to own what the f**k I said.”
She continued by elaborating that things may have been misconstrued in the past, so she wanted to set the record straight.
“I’m a b*tch who’s going to walk in what the f**k I said. And I owe two motherf***ers an apology because I communicated some sh*t wrong to them some years ago.”
Mo’Nique’s Unconventional Way Of Apologizing
That’s when Mo’Nique addressed Perry and Winfrey, saying:
“Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, I want to apologize for telling y’all to suck my d**k because I forgot to tell y’all to lick the nuts that came with them.”
The crowd erupted in applause, seemingly relishing in Mo’Nique’s audacious words.
Her “apology” is just the latest in a series of public disputes she’s had with big names in Hollywood.
Despite her successes, Mo’Nique’s relationship with Hollywood has been tumultuous. She has publicly criticized several industry players for what she perceives as their unfair treatment of her.
The actress detailed her grievances on ‘Club Shay Shay’ and stressed why it was important to speak out against the people who she believed had done her wrong.
But just days after the interview aired and went viral on social media, Mathis decided to weigh in with his thoughts on the situation.
Greg Mathis Speaks On Monique’s Viral Interview
Speaking on the debacle on Friday (February 9), Mathis had taken to Instagram to denounce the comedian’s comments about her industry peers.
“Stop going after each other in public like this. You’re embarrassing yourselves, [and] you’re embarrassing our community,” he said in a recorded video.
“I know many times you have to defend yourself about what’s being said, but why can’t we do it directly? And I just want you to know, I believe that we’re being laughed at by all the major studios and by their executives seeing us in public, Black folks, going at each other.”
Winfrey nor Tyler have commented on Mo’Nique’s apology as of yet.
