The biggest of acts usually give the smallest of hints. As of now, the New York Yankees might have just given that hint. Their story with Blake Snell ended prematurely when the latter rejected their initial offer.
Due to a rumored $100 million gap between their valuation, the Pinstripes found it better to focus elsewhere. Until now, that stance had remained firm – the Yankees were “done” with Snell. But then, just when they thought they were out, something pulled them back again.
While the Bronx Bombers are happy with their current rotation, somewhere in their minds there’s a worry – what if injuries once again return to the roster?
Despite a quality starting lineup, the Pinstripes are quite thin when it comes to backups. As a result, adding another strong pitcher seems quite natural. What if that someone else is Blake Snell? A changed Yankees stance does point toward him.
The New York Yankees find themselves on the road towards Blake Snell
The once out, then in and then out, story of the Yankees for Blake Snell hasn’t finally ended yet. While the Bombers still consider themselves out, New York Post’s Jon Heyman has revealed that this stance may have softened a little.
“A Yankees person who’d been saying for weeks they are “done” seeking Snell only noted late this week that Snell’s camp would have to “move” (i.e. lower its demands) to get something done.”
So the story has shifted from “never!” to “maybe”. The Yankees-Snell saga has been filled with conflicting reports. Just recently, the reports of a return to the table were said to be incorrect.
Now Heyman is indicating that even if they aren’t back on the table, there is a willingness in the Yankees to give Snell another chance. A chance to make an offer they can’t refuse.
However, as has been the case all winter – the team wants Snell to lower his demands. Apart from the Yankees, no other team has reportedly given a considerable offer to the ace.
Still, he and Scott Boras demand a deal that’s over $200 million. The other option is a small-term deal with a huge AAV. But a small-term deal might just be worse for the Yankees than an expensive longer-term one.
Two rigid parties demanding flexibility
It’s interesting how both the Yankees and Snell are rigid in their stance. But in this case, the Pinstripes have no choice. Their payroll has crossed the $297 million threshold and they’re set to pay 110% tax if they sign Snell. Also, they’ll lose their draft picks, so it becomes imperative for the Yankees to not go overboard.
On the other hand, at 31, Snell is looking to get a major payday. This could be the biggest chance for the 2x Cy Young winner to get a big deal. So it’s understandable why Boras and him, are still adamant in their demands. However, something’s got to give here. But who will be the one to budge from their stand?
