Oprah Winfrey’s life is truly an endless source of inspiration and an example for everyone who has ever known her.
The queen of talk shows, the tycoon of the media and the humanitarian, these are the names that people always remember when talking about Oprah Winfrey. This woman not only symbolizes the power of women in the American entertainment industry but is also a symbol of relentless improvement and extraordinary efforts.
It can be said that Oprah Winfrey has become an endless source of inspiration and an example for everyone who has ever watched the show or read about her life.
Life and childhood were difficult
Oprah Winfrey is a famous and important philanthropist for South Africa. She herself created many schools for disadvantaged girls in this country.
Of course, almost every famous person started from somewhere or some very special situation, but Oprah’s childhood was not as beautiful as other children’s. That is also the reason why, when she became a famous person, she spared no effort, money and time to build good things for the world. She wanted to create her own charity, but build it in the form of a school.
And the school she built in South Africa became a part of her life. Oprah dreams that all the girls who study at the school will become future African leaders.
It can be said that Oprah’s difficult childhood helped her become the strong and successful person she is today. When looking back, she often said that she did not want any child to suffer the same terrible things she went through.
Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, the first daughter of an unmarried teenage couple in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah grew up in a Baptist family with mother Vernita Lee and father Vernon Winfrey.
Her parents had to go through an extremely difficult time determining what would happen to them and how to raise Oprah, who was still a baby. As a result, Oprah had to move in with her grandmother until she was 6 years old, when her grandmother passed away. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Oprah moved back to live with her mother and three younger half-siblings. They lived together in the slums of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
While living with her mother, Oprah was abused at the age of 9 by close relatives whom her family always trusted. Crippled by successive unfortunate events, Oprah had to go through an extremely difficult adolescence. She no longer remembers how many times she tried to escape from home. She became more stubborn and demanding, she was willing to break her glasses so that her mother would have to buy her a new, more beautiful and stylish pair of glasses.
However, the real disaster came when Oprah became pregnant at the age of 14. Sadly, the baby died shortly after birth. Unable to stand Oprah’s rebellion, her mother was forced to take her back to live with her biological father in Nashville, Tennessee. The father is a lot stricter than Oprah’s mother. He forced his daughter to memorize 5 vocabulary words every day or else he would not let her eat dinner. However, this was an important turning point in Oprah’s life, because from this point on she achieved a lot of success.
The journey to success
When she transferred to Nashville High School, Oprah quickly showed her talent and became one of the best students. She became an honored student at the school and was voted by her friends as the most popular girl. Oprah’s academic achievements are also extremely respectable.
She joined the school’s speech team and won second prize in the national competition. At this time, Oprah had all the qualities to become an outstanding speaker, and it was not difficult for her to win a scholarship to the University of Tennessee.
Since entering college, Oprah began to become the celebrity she is known for today. In her freshman year at the University of Tennessee, Oprah became Miss Black of Nasville High School, as well as Miss Black of the state of Tennessee. With her fame and great speaking background, Oprah became the first black woman to land a job on television at the age of 19.
After graduating from college in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Oprah continued her life by becoming a television reporter abroad. The first place she worked was in Baltimore. She was then recruited to a local television talk show, called People Are Talking. Also during this time, she became the host of the game program Dialing for Dollars.
After working at several local businesses in Baltimore, Oprah Winfrey became chief television correspondent for Chicago AM station. With her ability, Oprah turned AM Chicago from a station poorly rated by television audiences into the most popular television program in Chicago.
In 1985, thanks to the reputation of this program, executives decided to change its name to the Oprah Winfrey Show. The following year, the show aired nationwide and became the number 1 hit show in the US. Now Oprah Winfrey has completely become the media queen she is today.
With her success, Oprah has built her own book club, a magazine called “O” Magazine as well as her own television talk show.
Even though she is at the peak of success, Oprah always remembers to share that success with the poor. She turned to the Nelson Mandela and Christmas Kindness Foundation, specializing in disadvantaged children. She said that helping those unfortunate children helped her relieve the pain of her childhood.
Oprah also donates to many other charities such as Moorehouse College, Harold Washington Library, United Negro College Fund, Tennessee State University Foundation, and many others. This also marked the beginning of Oprah’s future charitable activities.
When talking about Oprah Winfrey, editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine, Mr. Atoosa Rubenstein, said: “Oprah is the type of person who, when successful, will share it with those who need it most around her. That’s why she is a hero in my eyes and everyone’s eyes, a great role model.”
