Reaves was a good sport about it all.
Your Los Angeles Lakers’ played most of their presumed starters during their preseason finale against the Phoenix Suns Thursday, a 123-100 blowout loss. Phoenix sat a few of their star players, but All-Star forward Kevin Durant did suit up in the game.
Within the matchup, Durant scored a basket on Lakers guard Austin Reaves, then proceeded to shout over to the Lakers bench about how Reaves shouldn’t be guarding him. It was all in good fun, and Durant meant no ill will.
Durant was aiming the smack talk toward Lakers assistant coach Jordan Ott, who was a former coach of Durant as well. He was just playing around with LA, but Reaves responded in a joking manner as well.
Reaves isn’t known for his defense, although he isn’t bad on that end of the floor. But he doesn’t have the size to match up with Durant whatsoever. So, when the Suns star got him in a matchup, he took full advantage of the situation.
It was a fun atmosphere within the game, especially for a preseason contest. Both Phoenix and LA were out there playing basketball and trying to get ready for the start of the regular season in a good way. The two Pacific Division squads are some of the frontrunners to win the NBA title, so they know that learning how to play against one another will be crucial.
The Lakers and Suns play their first game against one another next week in the Lakers home opening game. It will be a good test early on in the year for the Lakers, and they will have a chance to make an early statement against a team that they will have to deal with all year in the Western Conference.
