With four caps already to his name at just 20 years old, Victor Wembanyama is undoubtedly the future of the France team. However, he admits that until now he has not been able to live up to his crazy expectations of the Blues.
When some require time to acclimatize in this completely new environment, he immediately found his bearings. Selected for the French team at the age of 18, Victor Wembanyama immediately established himself as a choice option.
His first cap, honored in November 2022, saw him score 20 points against Lithuania. And suffice to say that the following ones turned out to be of the same ilk.
In the space of four matches played with the Blues, the young interior has accumulated no less than 76 points, an average of 19 units per match.
A good way to immediately catch the eye of Vincent Collet and his staff, what’s more in an interesting context. Thus, these performances would almost guarantee his place in the French group which will compete in the Paris Olympic Games next summer.
Victor Wembanyama’s crazy revelation about the Blues
Author of a very good rookie season in the NBA, Wembanyama has apparently only strengthened his chances of defending the French colors during the upcoming Olympics. This is also what the recent arrival of Vincent Collet in San Antonio suggested . But rather than rejoicing in advance, Victor recently admitted that he saw himself playing for the national team much sooner. Hector Ledesma of ClutchPoints reports:
My 12-year-old self would probably have said something like, “Why not earlier, why not the year before.” ” I do not know. When I was little, I wanted to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games with the national team. That was one of my goals but unfortunately, I’m a little behind on that. All this to say that I already had high expectations of myself.
Ambitious by nature, Wemby always imagined himself wearing the blue jersey one day. However, it seems that the fact of having had to wait until his 18th birthday to achieve this amounted to a failure for him. He would have preferred to do it… six years earlier, from the age of 12 (!), and represent France in Rio. Unfortunately for him, Boris Diaw, Joffrey Lauvergne and even Kim Tillie prevented him from doing so.
In any case, it should only be a postponed game for the native of Chesnay, who will a priori have the honor of competing in the Olympic Games on the ground where he grew up and dribbled his first balls. He can therefore consider that fate has been rather kind to him. All that remains now is to hope that he will shine again with the French team on this occasion and that he will offer them their first Olympic gold medal.
Very demanding of himself these days, Victor Wembanyama has in fact always expected great things from himself. The proof with this anecdote about the French team, which he finally joined six years after what he had initially planned.
