Behind Cardi B’s Golden Met Gala Dress

Cardi B showed up to the Met Gala in a Versace look—and Versace car! The rapper had one of the most elaborate entrances at the 2022 Met Gala.

Cardi B wasn’t lying when she said she likes stunting and shining.

The “WAP” rapper’s Atelier Versace look for Monday’s Met Gala 2022 red carpet might well have been the night’s heaviest, as it was made from a full mile of golden metal chains, per a press release from the fashion house.

A “high-voltage take on Gilded Age high-glamour,” per the brand, the creation required that 20 members of its atelier hand-stitch the lengths of links onto a tulle gown, a process that took 1,300 hours to complete.

And while nearly every inch of Cardi’s body was covered in chains and Versace Medusa medallions — in addition to the dress itself, she also wore a multi-layered choker and elbow-length gloves constructed from the same sparkly hardware — her commitment to the event’s “gilded glamour” theme didn’t stop at her ensemble.

The Grammy winner and Donatella Versace pulled up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a convertible covered in the brand’s signature gold Barocco print, perfectly matching her ride to her red carpet style.

“She’s so brave to wear it because it’s so heavy,” Versace told Vogue on the carpet. “But look at her body, she’s insane. Only her, she can wear it.”

“I don’t care what anybody says: This is a competition. The Met Gala, this is a f—king competition,” Cardi, 29, told the mag in a behind-the-scenes video posted Wednesday. “And we’re going No. 1.”
