But fans claim the game was ‘rigged’ for LeBron after a controversial call late in the game.
In the final minute of the contests, the Suns were furious when James was granted a timeout by the officials.
That was despite the ball apparently being loose after Austin Reaves had it knocked away by Suns star Devin Booker.
The Lakers were allowed to take the timeout and keep the ball, and held on for a close win.
Fans flooded social media with their wild theory that the inaugural in-season tournament was ‘rigged’ for James.
One said: “We ALL knew this tournament would be rigged for LeBron and the Lakers. Let’s not act surprised now.”
Another commented: “Austin lost the ball before LeBron signaled for a timeout. BS call by the refs. The NBA rigged this win for the Lakers.”
A third posted: “League loves LeBron. They gonna make sure he wins this in season tournament to add to his goat legacy. Rigged game.”
The Lakers will face the New Orleans Pelicans in Las Vegas in the semifinals Thursday night.
The other semifinal will see the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Indiana Pacers.
The final is set for Saturday night with the winner taking home the first ever NBA Cup trophy.
Suns head coach Frank Vogel was furious with the controversial timeout call.
He said: “It’s a loose ball, and you can’t call a timeout on a loose ball.
“The whistle blows. I don’t know why. Everything in the league is reviewable. I don’t know why that can’t be reviewable.
“We got the trap, we got the turnover, and the damn whistle blows. It’s just frustrating.”
Kevin Durant scored 31 points in the Suns’ defeat – which was their third to the Lakers already this season.
Durant said: “That’s one play. It’s a 48-minute game. I don’t like to complain about calls.
“Sometimes the ref ain’t going to get it right all the time.
“Sometimes it’s on us to play through all that stuff and not worry about putting the game in the ref’s hands.”
