Patrick Mahomes and Four Kansas City Chiefs Teammates Selected for the 2024 NFL Pro Bowl
On January 3, the NFL revealed the Pro Bowl roster for the 2023-24 season, and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II secured his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl selection. The announcement, made via social media, highlighted Mahomes and fellow quarterbacks Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford, Tua Tagovailoa, and Lamar Jackson.
In addition to Mahomes, four other Chiefs players earned Pro Bowl honors. Tight end Travis Kelce, center Creed Humphrey, guard Joe Thuney, and defensive lineman Chris Jones received recognition for their outstanding performances during the season.
Kelce is on the verge of reaching 1,000 receiving yards for the eighth consecutive season, with Coach Andy Reid leaving his Week 18 status uncertain. Chris Jones has demonstrated consistency with 9.5 sacks and 12 tackles for a loss, despite facing increased attention from opposing offensive lines. Humphrey and Thuney received favorable grades from Pro Football Focus, with Humphrey allowing only nine quarterback pressures and Thuney maintaining a solid performance above a 75.0 grade throughout the season.
While Mahomes had a comparatively quieter year by his standards, earning 27 touchdown passes and a career-low passer rating of 92.6, his overall contribution, as measured by Total QBR, suggests a more nuanced evaluation. The broader context reveals challenges faced by the Chiefs, including dropped passes and route inconsistencies by wide receivers, struggles by offensive tackles, and occasional shortcomings in the run game.
Noteworthy Pro Bowl snubs from the Chiefs include cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed, both of whom excelled in 2023. Sneed, shadowing the opponent’s top wide receiver for most of the season, allowed only 42 receptions out of 81 targets. McDuffie, boasting a superior coverage grade from PFF at 78.3, also displayed prowess in run defense with a score of 70.7.
Running back Isiah Pacheco, with 935 rushing yards and 244 receiving yards in 2023, was another standout performer overlooked for the Pro Bowl. Despite a slightly lower yards-per-carry average in his second year, Pacheco has maintained an impressive 66.8 yards per game, providing him with a chance to achieve his first 1,000-yard season if he plays in Week 18.
