Wembanyama has sent a clear message to the Spurs front office about what to do this offseason

Wembanyama raises eyebrows with recent message to Spurs front office

BASKET-NBA-WEMBANYAMA

As we all know, Victor Wembanyama’s rookie campaign hasn’t been filled with sunshine and rainbows.

While we’ve seen him display his untapped potential on a nightly basis, those moments and performances have yet to result in enough victories.

Let’s remember that the Spurs are still in the midst of rebuilding, and more work is still needed.

Nobody expected the start of Wemby’s career to be filled with this many lows. After an exhilarating start to the season going 3-2, including two statement wins against the Phoenix Suns, it’s been a downhill ride since then.

After a loss to the Brooklyn Nets and an uneventful trade deadline, where the only move the Spurs made was sending Doug McDermott to the Pacers for a second-round pick, Victor expressed his desire to add veterans to the NBA’s youngest roster, with an average age of 23.5 years old.

While having the youngest roster in the NBA comes with an exciting brand of fast-paced action, the biggest con is the lack of leadership from experienced players.

There is nobody on the roster who can take action and show the young guys how to stay competitive, how to guide them through the rough times, and how to close out down the stretch.

The oldest players on the roster are Cedi Osman and Devonte Graham, who are both 28 years old and both will turn 29 this year. Osman has been consistent in his role off the bench, especially from beyond the arc, as he’s shooting an even 38% from three.

Sadly, Graham has found little to no playing time after being acquired at last year’s deadline in a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans.

He seemed to be the perfect player that the Spurs need to come off the bench. Someone who can come in and score from all three levels with efficiency while also facilitating and managing the floor but that has not come to fruition.

There is a substantial lack of depth on this roster, and experienced veterans are needed as this young roster continues to learn how to play full 48-minute basketball games with consistency and avoid finding themselves in deep holes, leading to those blowout losses the team has experienced this season.
