Before Tom Holland, it was Andrew Garfield and before him, it was Tobey Maguire, who perfected the web-head, and fans were enticed to witness the three together in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

But they’re not the lone actors who don the iconic suit, as back in the late ’70s, The Sound of Music actor Nicholas Hammond took the mantle of Peter Parker in his Spider-Man trilogy.

While these movies haven’t exactly aged well and lost into obscurity not long after their release, these flicks left a huge impact on Scott Waugh, who is behind the forthcoming Expendables 4.

Expendables 4 Director Would Love to Direct a Spider-Man Movie

Whether Expendables 4 will be able to revive the Sylvester Stallone franchise remains to be seen, Director Scott Waugh opened up about his long history of loving the Marvel superhero.

Considering his father, Fred Waugh, was a stuntman for Nicholas Hammond’s web swinger, Waugh became obsessed with the character, even getting a Spidey tattoo on his arm.

The director further expressed that he’d be thrilled to work on a Spidey flick for the MCU while speaking with Comicbook, stating,

“My father was the original Spider-Man in the TV show… So yes, I think I have comic book in my blood. I have the original Spider-Man suit from the TV show, and absolutely would be thrilled to be a part of, especially be a part of, a Spider-Man movie.”

Even though it can’t be said for sure whether Waugh will be able to land the keys to MCU’s biggest cash cow in the future, Marvel sure does need Spidey more than ever to end their recent struggles.

Is Spider-Man the key to ending Marvel’s struggles?

Despite having an influx of MCU projects in the last few years, a major portion of these releases has failed to leave an impact like most pre-Endgame MCU entries.

However, the two biggest anomalies from the last two phases were No Way Home and Guardians of the Volume. 3, which are deservingly some of the most acclaimed MCU movies since Infinity War.

And even though Guardians 3’s success was in the hands of James Gunn, who has jumped ship to DC, the Web-head remains the biggest key for MCU’s resurgence, if done right, as his last movie made $1.9B.

Although it’ll be interesting to see how Marvel handles the fourth Spider-Man movie, Expendables 4‘s performance might determine whether Waugh will stand a chance to work on his favorite superhero.

The Expendables 4 will hit theatres on 22 September 2023.
