James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has offered an update on the next movie in the fan-favorite Bond franchise, and it is simply that we shouldn’t expect any new 007 movies anytime soon. As of right now, there’s no movement on anything.
While speaking to Deadline at Christopher Nolan’s British Film Institute Fellowship Award ceremony recently, Broccoli was asked if there was anything to share about James Bond’s future and she replied:
“No, there’s nothing I can tell you about the next Bond film. There’s nothing. Nothing is happening yet.”
I imagine they are still figuring out how in the hell they want to proceed after Daniel Craig’s epic run as the character. I think it’s fine that they are going to take their time and give the franchise a long rest before they jump back into it.
It was previously reported that EON and Amazon are “pushing for Nolan and that he’s on board, in principle, unless his need for creative freedom isn’t met. There are sticking points to be ironed out in terms of tone that might scuttle things though.”
The rumored plan was that EON is looking to do a full reboot of the franchise for the modern era, and they are looking to adapt some of the classic Ian Fleming novels, “in period settings, that stick close to the original source material.”
Nolan previously said that there is “no truth to those rumors,” but even if there were, he’s not going to say anything.
The filmmaker has been very vocal about wanting to direct a James Bond movie, and he previously said: “It would be an amazing privilege to do one.
At the same time, when you take on a character like that you’re working with a particular set of constraints.
It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong.”
Nolan previously shared a few years ago that he has talked to the Bond franchise producers, saying: “I’ve spoken to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years. I deeply love the character, and I’m always excited to see what they do with it. Maybe one day that would work out.
You’d have to be needed, if you know what I mean. It has to need reinvention; it has to need you. And they’re getting along very well.”
Broccoli previously said they’ve barely scratched the surface of the next iteration of Bond, and there’s “a big road ahead.” She also explained that the iconic character has to be “reinvented for the next chapter.”
“I go back to GoldenEye when everyone was saying ‘the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world’s at peace and now there’s no villains’ – and boy was that wrong!
“Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character … and also the world was ready for it. I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there’s a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven’t even begun with that.”
We’re just going to have to be patient and wait and see what they do next with this character. Whatever it is, I hope they do something really cool with it!
