Catherine O’Hara portrayed Macaulay Culkin’s on-screen mother in the 1990 film Home Alone.

The movie follows an eight-year-old boy, Kevin, who is left behind when his family leaves for France.

It features a scene where his mother, Kate, sends him to sleep in the attic as a punishment.

It causes the eight-year-old boy to mouthing off about his family.

After which, she tells him that he would be pretty sad if he “woke up tomorrow” and didn’t find his family.

According to O’Hara, the difficult part came when Kevin said, “No, I wouldn’t,” and she had to respond with, “Then say it again – maybe it’ll happen.”

The Beetlejuice actress shared that she struggled to deliver that line as she couldn’t bear something like that to a child.

“I can’t tell you how much that killed me,” she said before adding, “I could not wrap my head around saying something so horrific to this beautiful child,” as per Variety.

She also praised Culkin for his performance in the movie, as she credited its global success to his portrayal of Kevin McCallister.

Released in 1990, Home Alone was a huge hit and has since remained one of the best Christmas movies of all time.
