After making a large sum of money from the movie Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin abandoned his parents and allegedly struggled with drug abuse

Sometimes, family dynamics can be challenging. And it almost never works out well when fame and wealth are combined.
After Earning $4.6 Million from Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin Abandoned His Parents - Allegedly Struggled With Drug Abuse

Unlike most celebrities, who try to keep their personal lives private, some openly discuss their parental conflicts in songs or memoirs.

Consider Macaulay Culkin, who is often regarded as one of the most prominent child actors of the 1990s.

At the age of 4, Culkin started acting, making small stage appearances as well as in TV shows and films.

The actor, now 42 gained recognition and praise for his performance as Kevin McCallister in the 1990 comedy hit, Home Alone.

After enthralling millions of people in the 1990s with his boyish charm and unmatched acting abilities, Culkin’s personal life appeared to take a wrong turn, resulting in a string of unfortunate incidents.

Macaulay Culkin Allegedly Abandoned His Parents

Some children will probably pack a bag of food and a toy and declare they are leaving their house when they have to express displeasure with their parents.

Macaulay Culkin, however, was not interested in any of that kid stuff as he applied for and was granted parental emancipation at the age of only 15.

Yes, he simply fought against them in court. Of course, at the time, Culkin’s parents, Christopher ‘Kit’ Culkin and Patricia Brentrup, were engaged in a bitter custody dispute that was beginning to resemble a money grab for the My Girl actor’s earnings.

His father, in particular, took a lot of the heat because, according to some, he had been an outspoken and powerful force behind Culkin’s career to the point of harm.

When he wrote his “quasi-fictional” memoir, Junior, 11 years later, he was still hounding his father.

The memoir’s protagonist has a turbulent relationship with an abusive father.

During the book’s promotion, Culkin said of his father to New York Magazine:

“I knew from a very early age that I better take notes on him. Notes on how not to be, notes on how I don’t want to be when I grow up.”

The family continued to struggle even after Kit Culkin had a severe stroke in 2014.

He told the Daily Mail, effectively putting an end to any chance of reconciliation.

“I don’t consider him [Macaulay Culkin] a son anymore.”

‘I’m a Pretty Peerless Person’

The parents of Macaulay Culkin never got married; they separated when he was in his teen years, and his mother then filed for custody.

He filed a lawsuit against his parents to prevent them from managing his trust fund, which was reportedly worth $15 to $20 million.

News about the custody dispute spread quickly. Speaking on the same, the Richie Rich actor told Esquire in 2020:

“It’s always misconstrued, that I ‘emancipated’ myself from my parents.

I legally took my parents’ names off of my trust fund and found an executor, someone who would look over my finances, just in case anyone wanted to stick their f***ing pinkie in the pie. But the next thing you know, the story was that I divorced my parents.”

The 42-year-old actor further admitted:

“It’s also like, OK, everybody, stop acting so freaking shocked that I’m relatively well-adjusted.

Look: I’m a pretty peerless person. If I was an accountant, I could look left and right, and there’s other accountants sitting next to me in the office. It’s not like that.

It’s one of those things where, like, the cliché that we’re all snowflakes? That we’re all unique? Well, you know what? I actually am a snowflake.”
