Young was initially selected as the fifth overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2018 NBA draft after one season of college basketball with the University of Oklahoma. However, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a swift draft day trade.

As part of the trade, the Hawks secured Young and acquired a protected future first-round pick from the Mavericks. In exchange, the Hawks sent the draft rights to the third overall pick, Luka Dončić, to the Mavericks.

This trade was significant for both teams, with Young and Dončić emerging as key players for their respective franchises.

The 6-foot-1 point guard made the NBA All-Star Game twice in 2020 and 2022 and the All-NBA Third Team in 2022. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2019.

Let’s look at Trae Young’s contract details, salary, and career earnings.

Trae Young Contract: $207 million

During the summer of 2021, Young inked a lucrative five-year maximum contract extension with the Hawks worth $207 million, solidifying his commitment to remain in Atlanta. This extension followed a breakout season that included his first playoff run.

The deal is set to cover the 2022-23 season through the 2026-27 season, with the last year serving as a player option. This structure provides the elite shooter and distributor with flexibility in making decisions about the future of his career.

Before securing his current contract, Young played under a rookie scale deal spanning from the 2018-19 season to the 2021-22 season.

This initial contract amounted to $26.5 million over the first four seasons of his career, resulting in an average annual salary of $6.6 million.

Trae Young Career Earnings

By the conclusion of the 2023-24 NBA season, Young is anticipated to have earned $103.2 million exclusively from his NBA salary over his first six seasons in the league, according to Spotrac.

It’s important to note that this calculation excludes potential income from off-court ventures, such as endorsements and partnerships. The mentioned amount does not account for deductions like taxes, agent fees, or other business-related expenses.

Looking forward to the conclusion of his current contract after the 2026-27 NBA season, the 2022 All-NBA Third Team member is expected to have accumulated career earnings surpassing $241.2 million if he accepts the player option in the final year of his deal.

Trae Young Salary 2023-24

For the ongoing 2023-24 NBA season, Young is slated to earn $40.06 million, per a report by HoopsHype.

This amount makes him the highest-paid player on the Atlanta Hawks roster and the 17th highest-paid player in the entire league for the current campaign.

Looking into the future, the former Oklahoma Sooners standout’s salary is expected to increase to $43.03 million in the 2024-25 season.

It will rise to $45.9 million for the 2025-26 season before reaching its peak at $48.9 million in the 2026-27 season, a player option and the final year of his current contract.
