Charlize Theron is pretty enthusiastic about returning as Mary
The existence of Peter Berg’s Hancock can be considered a marvel in itself. Originally written as a screenplay titled Tonight, He Comes by Vy Vincent Ngo in 1996, the film focused on an alcoholic antihero.
The film also challenged the prevailing norms of the superhero genre. Its unique narrative caught director Tony Scott’s attention. The film starred Will Smith as the lead alongside Charlize Theron.
Will Smith in & as Hancock
Despite receiving some mixed and negative reviews, Hancock managed to earn a whopping $629.4 million worldwide. It also became the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year.
Any film that rakes in such a staggering amount, especially in the superhero genre, is almost assured a second installment.
Charlize Theron Wants To Return To Superhero Genre
It’s pretty clear that both Will Smith and Charlize Theron want to reprise their roles for the second installment of the film.
Theron, especially, is pretty enthusiastic about returning as Mary. While promoting her film The Old Guard in a press tour, Theron expressed her willingness to return to the world of Hancock.
Hancock (2008)
Theron said (via Movie Web):
“You know, for a while we [talked about a sequel]. I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We’ll be superheroes with our walkers, you know. And I’ll still go! I’ll still make that movie, I would do it in a heartbeat.”
Speaking of the potential cast apart from Will Smith and Theron, Jason Bateman, who played Mary’s publicist spouse, could be an important addition. It’s imperative to understand that Hancock and Mary’s powers weaken around each other, so it would be in Ray’s best interest to keep them away from each other. Besides, Ray and Mary’s son Jay Head could also make a return.
