The drummer had a mishap during “Master of Puppets”.
Metallica have kicked off the European leg of their M72 world tour earlier this year, debuting the band’s “No Repeat Weekends” concept that sees them perform two nights in the same venue, with completely different setlists and opening acts. While the run has been acclaimed so far for the chance to spice up the setlist and for Metallica’s intensity onstage, it hasn’t been without its occasional hiccups.
Recently, guitarist Kirk Hammett had to power through an injury during a live set in Gothenburg, Sweden, while drummer Lars Ulrich had an off night while playing “One” on the second Metallica gig at this year’s massive Download festival in the UK, leading to the release of a corrected official audio version that polarized fans.
On the first night of the festival, however, the drummer also suffered a mishap while the group performed the set closer and fan-favorite “Master of Puppets”.
During the song’s bridge, footage shows Ulrich having to call his drum tech to replace a broken snare, kicking the damaged model out of the way while he continues to perform the song.
The tech soon gets the job done, and the drummer sits once more behind the kit and continues to play as if nothing happened. You can check out fan-filmed footage of that moment below:
