The Los Angeles Lakers, who had a 21-20 record at the time of the game, were still striving to make the NBA playoffs. The Lakers were making an effort to demonstrate that they might prevail without Shaquille O’Neal at the time, and there existed doubts about Kobe Bryant’s capacities to manage the team’s affairs alone.

The starting lineup for the game included Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, Smush Paker, Kwame Brown, and Chris Mihm. Devin Green, Devean George, Luke Walton, Sasha Vujacic, and Brian Cook rounded up around the bench. The Toronto Raptors pitted a youthful Chris Bosh on the other end of the court alongside Mike James, Matt Bonner, Morris Peterson, and Jalen Rose, who was entrusted with defending the Black Mamba.

Bryant scored 14 points in the first quarter as the Lakers were trailing by seven. Although he scored 12 additional points in the second quarter, the Lakers were nevertheless down by 14 points at halftime.

Bryant began to heat up in the second half. He kindled up and ignited the Toronto Raptors with 27 points and provided the Lakers the upper hand, heading into the final frame.

Kobe, however, was far from wrapping it up. The match picked up steam in the fourth quarter as Bryant scored 28 more points to seal the victory and solidify his position in NBA history.

Being the only viably offensive option for the team, Kobe Bryant’s concerns were with rendering his team funcional during the course of the season than he was with the record.
