Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin hinted at changes for the team’s quarterback room this offseason, and the first domino has officially fallen.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Steelers and veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky have mutually decided to “part ways” this offseason. The 29-year-old had two years remaining on his deal, including $5.25 million for the upcoming 2024 season:

Trubisky signed a two-year deal with the Steelers in 2022 following Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement. He opened the season as Pittsburgh’s starting QB before eventually losing the job to rookie Kenny Pickett.

The Steelers handed Trubisky a two-year contract extension to continue as Pickett’s backup last year. He started two games this season in place of an injured Pickett, but Tomlin benched him in favor of Mason Rudolph after two lackluster outings.

Rudolph won each of his three regular season starts to help the Steelers into the postseason with a 10-7 record. However, they were easily dispatched by Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round.

With Trubisky set to be released, Pickett is the only Pittsburgh quarterback under contract for 2024, as Rudolph is a pending free agent himself.

Trubisky went 2-5 in games started over his seven years with the Steelers, tossing just eight touchdowns against 10 interceptions.
