MEMPHIS — Bradley Beal didn’t make the three-game road trip as he’s rehabbing his low back strain.

Kevin Durant did, but he wound up sitting out Friday’s NBA In-Season Tournament group play game with right foot soreness after logging in the second-most minutes of anyone in the NBA.

Thank goodness for Devin Booker.

Without his Big 3 compadres, Booker scored 40 points in leading the short-handed Suns to 110-89 win over also short-handed Grizzlies before a sellout crowd of 17,794 at FedExForum.

Eric Gordon added 20 points while Grayson Allen and Jordan Goodwin each went for 14. Santi Aldama paced the Grizzlies (3-12) with 21 points and veteran Derrick Rose added 17 off the bench.

The Suns (10-6) have won their last six games since Booker returned from a right calf strain that sidelined him for five games. They finished West Group A play 3-1 to stay in the ‘wildcard’ hunt for the ‘knockout round’ or quarterfinals of the In-Season Tournament.

The Grizzlies didn’t win in group play.

Here’s what we learned as Suns coach Frank Vogel said Kevin Durant (right foot soreness), Drew Eubanks (left ankle sprain) and Yuta Watanabe (left quad contusion) are “possibilities” for Sunday at New York.

Suns know the tiebreakers

The Grizzlies emptied their bench with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter and trailing by 17 points, but Phoenix kept in its main guys, particularly Booker, until the final buzzer.

With time running out, Booker launched a 3 that connected off the glass with 13.3 seconds left to not only give him 40, but it increased their point differential total in West Group A play to plus-34.

Booker said he didn’t hear the fan call for 40 points, admitted he meant no respect to the Grizzlies, but this is all about that tiebreaker.

The Suns went into Friday’s game plus-13 as they lost to the Lakers by three points, beat Utah by three and took care of Portland by 13 points, 120-107, Tuesday.

Who knows, that Booker banker 3 may prove to be the difference in them getting into the quarterfinals. The ‘wild card’ goes to a team from each conference with the best record in group play that finishes second in its group.

The Suns finished second in West Group A to the Lakers, who went 4-0 in group play.

Booker was sidelined for that game with the right calf strain.

Group play ends Tuesday. The Suns will likely find out then their In-Season fate.

Injury update

Durant was experiencing right foot soreness Thursday, had it evaluated later that night and the team determined he’d sit Friday’s game.

Vogel said before Friday’s game he hopes this is just a “day-to-day” or “game-to-game” situation for Durant and nothing serious.

After the game, he said Durant, Watanabe and Eubanks are all “possibilities” to play Sunday.

Watanabe and Eubanks both did individual workouts with the Suns staff, but Watanabe took the court for a pregame workout, too. He’s missed Phoenix’s last four games with a left quad contusion after taking a knee to the thigh in a pickup game with teammates last Saturday on an off day.

The Suns played the Friday before at Utah and had a rematch Sunday against the Jazz in Salt Lake City.

Eubanks hadn’t missed any games before the Grizzlies matchup as he’s been a backup to 7-footer Jusuf Nurkic and played deep into the fourth quarter in games this season.

Beal (low back strain) is scheduled to be out at least three weeks rehabbing the back before having it re-evaluated. The Suns made that timetable announcement Nov. 17.

Damion Lee (knee) is still a week or so away from getting off crutches as the Suns hope to get him back before the end of the regular season.

Lee injured his right meniscus during an on-court workout before training camp and had a procedure done on the meniscus Oct. 11.

Booker importance undeniable

Durant is having an MVP start to the season, but he said something about Booker going into the opener that came to the forefront Friday night.

“He’s going to keep us rolling this year,” Durant said.

The Suns are 6-0 since Booker returned from the right calf strain.

Now there are a couple of disclaimers.

One, Durant is not only second in the NBA in scoring at 31.4 points a game and first in 3-point shooting percentage at 52.2%, he averaged 34.2 in the first five victories of this six-game surge.

Two, this latest win came against the Grizzlies, who are without Ja Morant (25-game suspension), Marcus Smart (foot), Steven Adams (knee), Brandon Clarke (Achilles), Luke Kennard (knee), Xavier Tillman (knee) and Jake LaRavia (eye abrasion).

Desmond Bane played after being questionable with a left foot sprain, had 10 assists Friday, but only scored six points on 3-of-12 shooting.

Suns did a solid job forcing Bane to take tough shots around the basket and defended the 3.

Bane went 0-for-5 from deep. The Grizzlies look a mess in terms of offensive structure, but the Suns played in a role in that in limiting them to 9-of-33 from 3.

Still, Booker has returned and is not only average 29 points during this six-game win streak, but he’s also tallied 48 assists to just 15 turnovers.

Now five of those turnovers came Friday as the Grizzlies could afford to play him tighter with Durant out, but he still managed two key assists in the fourth with the first one on a drive-and-kick to Gordon for a deep 3 to give the Suns a 98-82 lead with 4:24 left.

Game essentially over.

Booker impacted the game on the defensive end as well with four steals and a block.

Beyond the individual numbers, when Booker went to the bench, the Suns had bad stretches of offense.

Vogel is trying this rotation in which Booker comes out the game midway through the quarter or so and returns later in the quarter. Booker’s starting each quarter instead of playing all the first and third and returning during the second or fourth — unless he was needed to play the game’s final 12 minutes.

Booker checked out with 5:16 left in the third and Phoenix leading, 75-62.

The Grizzlies went on a 9-2 run to pull within six, 77-71. Vogel call a timeout with 2:08 remaining in the quarter and put Booker back in the game.

Booker immediately hit a jumper as the Suns led by eight going into the fourth.

That lull doesn’t happen with Durant out there, but Booker’s improved ability to control pace, knowledge of offense and communicate what is needed to everyone makes him even more valuable.

Didn’t think that was even possible, but Friday’s game further showed how important he is.

One last thing

Vogel said Goodwin has had “ups and downs” so far this season and that the coaches challenged him to improve his overall play.

He not only responded with tying his season high for points on 6-of-8 shooting, but Goodwin scored 10 consecutive points in the fourth with a segment of that coming with Booker on the bench.

Goodwin scored and was fouled when Josh Okogie replaced Booker with 8:36 left in the game.

He followed that up with making a free throw to complete the three-point play. Goodwin then hit a 3 and an 11-foot floater to give the Suns a 12-point advantage with 5:47 left.
