In recent years, basketball has truly become a global sport. A humble game that was created by James Naismith in 1891 has become the second most popular sport worldwide.

The NBA has profited immensely from basketball’s growing public appeal. In fact, the 2023 NBA playoffs averaged 5.47 million viewers per game, making it the most-watched postseason in the last five years.

The growing popularity of basketball has brought more attention to European leagues, which boast a distinct culture and playing style compared to the NBA. However, a 3x NBA All-Star has downplayed the quality levels of foreign leagues.

Gilbert Arenas discredits the quality of foreign teams

Gilbert Arenas played in the NBA from 2001 to 2012, predominantly for the Washington Wizards. Arenas had garnered a reputation for his deadly scoring, but injuries and poor behavior led to his premature departure from the NBA. After leaving the NBA, Arenas decided to join the Chinese side, Shanghai Sharks. In one season there, he averaged 20.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3 assists. Now, Arenas has become a successful host of multiple podcasts like Gil’s Arena and No Chill.

Having played in the NBA as well as overseas, Arenas provides a unique perspective on the game of basketball. This unique viewpoint has garnered him a substantial fan following since his retirement. However, he recently downplayed the quality of foreign teams.

He said, “The washed-up NBA players are by far the best players when they go overseas. The guys that can’t make it here (USA) anymore are going over there and they’re the best players in the country.” He further emphasized his point by using Kevin Durant and Devin Booker as an example. He said, “When they (Adelaide 36ers) played the Phoenix Suns, they’re not playing Kevin Durant and Booker. They’re not playing those guys”.

How does the NBA differ from European basketball?

European basketball and the NBA exhibit notable differences in playing style, team dynamics, and overall culture. The NBA, known for its athleticism and emphasis on individual brilliance, often features a faster-paced and higher-scoring game. In contrast, European basketball prioritizes teamwork, strategic plays, and a more deliberate pace.

The European game places significant importance on fundamentals, showcasing a diverse array of offensive and defensive strategies. Additionally, the NBA’s salary cap system and draft structure differ from the European model. While both leagues contribute to the global appeal of basketball, the distinctions highlight the varied approaches to the sport on different continents.
