While Tiger Woods’s multiple historical records remain unattainable for many, one record made by the 15-time major champ may soon get tied. After throwing a subtle shade at Woods with Adidas, Nick Dunlap is up to compete with the goat for another record.
At American Express, the 20-year-old amateur Dunlap is leading the scoreboard with 27 under 189. With three eagles and the last bogey-free round, Dunlap might go ahead and win the event altogether. Hence, Woods’s amateur record after 27 years is tying the record set by Phil Mickelson and Patrick Cantlay.
Nick Dunlap will become the first amateur in almost 33 years to win the PGAT event
As a reigning U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur champion, Dunlap is up for what the GOAT did in 1996. As of now, Tiger Woods is the only U.S. amateur winner to win on the PGA Tour after emerging victorious in the aforementioned event. If Dunlap does triumph over AmEx, he will add his name alongside Woods as a golfer who won on the PGA Tour as a reigning US amateur champion. Well, matching with Woods is not for Dunlap.
The amateur golfer will become the only amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson’s 1991 victory. In 1991, Lefty became the fourth amateur golfer to win on the PGA Tour before turning pro at the Northern Telecom Open. If Dunlap wins the American Express, he will become the first amateur to win on the Tour in almost 33 years and fifth in overall standing (kept since 1940).
Nick Dunlap started his round three with four back-to-back birdies on the first nine at the American Express. He made his first birdie at the par-5 11th hole and continued the streak till the 14th. After the remarkable feat on the first nine, Dunlap made sure to make the back more memorable.
Moving toward the 6th hole with nine birdies, Dunlap shot the third eagle of his American Express run. And then he finished it off with a birdie. The impressive bogey-free round of Dunlap had him score the lowest of the field with twelve under 60. This was also the lowest score that was carded by an amateur since Patrick Cantlay did it in 2011.
With one victory at the PGA West in La Quinta, Dunlap has tied the record of Cantlay, followed the history made by Mickelson, and done the unthinkable of coming closer to the legacy of Woods. The 20-year-old is up for greatness and may become the second youngest to attain his maiden victory since 1990. If the Alabama native does win, how will it impact his professional career?
What would Nick Dunlap get if he wins the American Express?
However, what he will get is a chance to turn pro immediately and participate in all the signature and additional events of the PGA Tour’s 2024 season. Moreover, if Dunlap refuses to become a Tour member, he will have a chance to be one in the 30 days after the conclusion of the 2024 season or the next season.
Nonetheless, his victory will make him eligible for PGA Tour events until 2026. In these two seasons, Dunlap can choose to become a pro or return to his college golf career until he makes his comeback. But for all that to come true, he has to win the American Express first. Will the 20-year-old amateur attain his maiden Tour victory? Stay tuned to find out!
