Kawhi Leonard’s sudden departure from Team USA training camp just weeks before the Paris Olympics has sent shockwaves through the basketball world. It’s an incredible opportunity to represent your nation in the Olympics and Clippers’ Leonard was given this golden opportunity, but he has had to step back.

At first, everyone thought it was because of a hurt knee, but now it sounds like there might be another reason. However, recent remarks from Team USA managing director Grant Hill hint that the situation might be more complicated than we first thought.

In a video statement, Hill expressed frustration by stating, “I don’t understand knees. We just felt we had to pivot. Not to get into the particulars, in terms of what went into the decision, but we felt it was in our best interests but also in the Clippers and Kawhi’s best interests to move into a different direction. We tried, we all tried and gave it a valiant effort. Unfortunately, we had to move forward.”

Team USA is already on its way to finding a suitable successor to replace the two-time NBA champion in light of this unexpected development. Anyhow, Hill gave Leonard high marks for his commitment and desire to participate in the Olympics. He claimed, “I applaud him for coming here, being willing to sacrifice, giving up his summer, representing our country, and playing for our program. Ultimately, it didn’t work out.”

Derrick White Officially replaces Kawhi Leonard at the Paris Olympics

Derrick White of the Boston Celtics will be joining the Men’s USA Basketball Team for the Olympics in Paris starting July 26. According to Executive Director Grant Hill, Team USA chose to send Kawhi Leonard home and replace him with Derrick.

In the media conference, he said, “I am happy to announce that Derrick will compete at his first Olympic Games on the heels of a championship season in Boston. We look forward to him joining the team in the coming days as we continue preparations for Paris.”

Since Leonard was out for 12 of the Clippers’ last 14 games with inflammation in his right knee, many are wondering why he was selected for the Olympic squad. Hopefully, Celtics point guard Derrick White can fulfill the expectations of Team USA and lead them to victory at the Olympics.
