Meghan Markle’s return to the United Kingdom seems unlikely anytime soon, especially given her strained relationship with the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton…
Despite relocating to California with her husband, Prince Harry, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, Meghan Markle remains a polarizing figure whenever the British royal family is mentioned. Her rare appearances in the UK since stepping back as a senior royal have sparked curiosity, with speculation about the challenges she might face if she were to visit again—whether for a short stay or a royal event.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton, famous for his collaboration with Princess Diana on Diana: Her True Story in 1992, has dismissed the possibility of Meghan returning to the UK. The primary reason? Her tense dynamic with Kate. In an interview on Sky News’ “Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips” last year, Morton expressed doubt when asked about the Sussexes returning to British soil. “Meghan Markle bowing to Kate Middleton? I don’t see that happening,” Morton said bluntly. “They’ve established their lives in California.”
According to royal protocol, Meghan would only need to curtsy to Kate if Prince William ascends the throne and Kate assumes the title of Queen Consort.
The friction between Meghan and Kate has been well-documented, including in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare. Harry recounts an incident where Kate demanded an apology from Meghan after the Duchess of Sussex allegedly remarked that Kate’s forgetfulness was due to pregnancy hormones during her third pregnancy with Prince Louis. Such conflicts have fueled doubts about whether reconciliation is possible between the two women.
Since stepping away from royal duties, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced chilly relations with other family members, and the divide shows no signs of healing. Royal expert Jennie Bond predicts that if the couple were to return to the UK—possibly for next year’s Invictus Games—they might be limited to meeting only three members of the royal family: King Charles, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. A reunion with the Prince and Princess of Wales appears highly unlikely.
Some sources suggest that Harry and Meghan may be considering a part-time return to the UK. However, the unresolved tensions, especially the question of royal protocols between Meghan and Kate, leave their potential comeback shrouded in uncertainty.
