In a newly released biography about the Princess of Wales, royal expert and author Rob Jobson reveals further cracks in the relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry, even before Meghan Markle officially joined the royal family in 2018. According to Jobson, Prince William, who proposed to Kate Middleton with the engagement ring of his late mother, is said to have been concerned about Harry’s decision to marry the “Suits” actress. William allegedly advised his younger brother to “cool off” the relationship, giving Meghan time to adjust to royal life before making a long-term commitment.
Jobson writes: “William was still worried about the marriage and even sought assurances from the Queen that his brother’s fiancée would not wear any of the jewelry from Princess Diana’s collection, even though his wife, Catherine, had been allowed to wear some, due to her position.” Prince William, who had a nearly decade-long romance with Kate Middleton before they married, was reportedly concerned about the speed of Harry and Meghan’s relationship.

The couple announced their engagement in November 2017, a year after going public with their relationship. They first met in June 2016. According to Jobson: “Harry claimed that the goodwill from William and Catherine had disappeared long before his wedding.” William confided in his brother, believing it would be better to give Meghan more time to adjust to royal life, advising Harry to “slow down” the relationship. “Harry felt offended and saw this as an insult,” Jobson added. “The direct result was the rapid deterioration of their relationship. According to Harry’s book Spare, William even physically assaulted him.”
The book also reveals that Meghan had a rocky start with William and Kate after she “disregarded the royal hierarchy.” “She didn’t just step on royal toes, she trampled all over them,” Jobson writes. “When Meghan, who had forgotten her lip gloss, asked to borrow some from Kate, the Duchess was ‘very surprised’ but reluctantly handed it over. According to Harry, she ‘grimaced’ after Meghan applied some to her fingers and dabbed it on her lips.”

The relationship between Harry and Meghan and Prince William and Princess Catherine is now nearly nonexistent, after the Sussexes stepped back from their senior royal roles in 2020. Their rift with the family has deepened, amplified by a series of interviews and Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, in which they claimed to have endured various forms of mistreatment within the royal family.
One of the most shocking claims was made in their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where the couple revealed that unnamed royal family members had “concerns and conversations about how dark [their child’s] skin might be.” Last December, Omid Scobie claimed in his book Endgame that those involved in the conversation were King Charles and Princess Catherine. Jobson further explains that Kate played a pivotal role in the Palace’s statement that “memories may vary” regarding the incident.
