In a heartfelt letter dated December 8, 1997, King Charles described his “confusion and despair at losing someone so young to this world,”…
The King, then Prince Charles, wrote about the “unbearable emptiness” that engulfed him after Diana’s tragic passing in a car accident in Paris. The letter, recently auctioned for $2,000, was reported by the Daily Mail.
The former Prince of Wales shared his “confusion and dismay at having to bid farewell to someone so young.” His former wife, Princess Diana, was only 36 at the time of her passing.
The three-page handwritten letter, penned on Highgrove House stationery, was dated just over three months after Diana’s death. It was addressed to his friend Peter Houghton and bore specific instructions to deliver it “by hand.” Diana’s untimely demise left behind her two sons, Prince William, then 15, and Prince Harry, just 12.
Signed “Charles,” the letter expressed empathy for Houghton’s pain, stating: “My heart breaks as I can only imagine the anguish and despair you must have experienced during the heartbreaking months of Liz’s illness.”
According to the Daily Express, the identity of the seller who put the letter up for auction remains undisclosed.
The auction was handled by RR Auction in Boston, USA. A spokesperson for the auction house commented: “This handwritten letter to Peter reflects the King’s heartfelt condolences for the loss of a loved one. Charles was likely deeply moved at the time of writing, as the tragic passing of Princess Diana had occurred only months earlier.”
Meanwhile, Prince Harry, Diana’s younger son, traveled to Colombia with his wife, Meghan Markle, on August 15. During a meeting with Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez and her husband Rafael Yerney Pinillo, Márquez expressed admiration for Princess Diana as well as for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
During their visit to Bogotá, Cartagena, and Cali, Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan, 43, engaged in various cultural and philanthropic activities. Speaking at a press conference ahead of their arrival, Vice President Márquez referenced Diana’s unrealized plans to visit Colombia. She remarked: “I believe Prince Harry’s presence here today fulfills his mother’s dream of visiting Colombia and offers a chance to showcase the best of our country.
