Fans of Gavin and Stacey are gearing up for its anticipated return this Christmas, but during the festivities in 2018, Mathew Horne had a frightful ordeal. When the actor, who plays Gavin Shipman in the BBC sitcom, was on his way back to his parent’s house after a night out at the local pub, he was scarily hit by a train.
The 46 year old actor was reportedly clipped by an East Midlands Trains passenger train in the village of Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire on 20 December 2018 as he made his way home. Thankfully, the star miraculously escaped the incident with just a scratch

Mathew was on his way home from a local pub, The Nelson, before he came into contact with the train. The pub’s duty manager told The Sun at the time: “It was a really, really unfortunate accident and it could have been a lot worse. We are all glad that it wasn’t.
“He was obviously very shaken up but he’s all right now. He’s got a bit of a scratch on him but no underlying issue there whatsoever. Mathew is a regular customer of ours. I can say that everybody was quite spirited that night and it’s a genuine mishap on his part.
“We know Mathew well. We were just making sure that he was OK, as we would with any customer.” They added: “Mathew wasn’t taken to hospital. The police had to be called just because of the nature of the incident. But they were just glad that he wasn’t harmed.”
East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed to the publication that paramedics and a doctor attended the incident and that a person was treated at the scene but didn’t need to be taken to hospital. British Transport Police also confirmed the incident, with a spokesman saying at the time: “The incident was reported to police at 22:37pm and is being treated as non-suspicious.
“Officers attended the incident along with paramedics and a person was escorted away from the scene.”
Ahead of the finale of Gavin and Stacey airing on Christmas Day (25 December), Mathew gushed over the show’s Christmas special, calling it “nothing short of a masterpiece”. He shared: “I want to say I was nervous about reading the script as it’s always been Ruth’s (Jones) and James’s (Corden) priority to get the script perfect in the first instance, to tell a story the right way. And I had no evidence to suggest that this final script wouldn’t adhere to those principles and be anything other than brilliant. I did have a nervous compulsion to read it immediately and my expectations were exceeded.”
Gavin And Stacey: The Finale will air at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer. The documentary Gavin And Stacey: A Fond Farewell will be shown at 7pm on New Year’s Day on BBC One and iPlayer
