Novak Djokovic called his team “awful” during an Australian Open outburst as the Serb thought his team wasn’t helping him much during a disappointing loss to Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic, seeded at No. 1, exited the Australian Open in the semifinal after fourth-seeded Sinner handed him a 6-1 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-3 loss. For Djokovic, it was his first Australian Open loss since 2018 and also his first semifinal defeat at Melbourne Park.

After saving a match point in the third set and just barely forcing a fourth set, Djokovic had a 40-0 lead on his serve in the fourth game of the fourth set. But what looked like a very comfortable service hold, ended with Djokovic getting broken as the Serb dropped five consecutive points from 40-0.

After dropping his service in a devastating way and falling 3-1 down to Sinner in the fourth set, Djokovic turned to his team. In a moment of frustration, Djokovic yelled in Serbian and made it pretty clear how he felt about their help and contribution.

“You are so bad. Awful! Awful! All of you!” Djokovic could be heard ranting in Serbian.

Just before getting broken in the fourth set, Djokovic also got annoyed by the chair umpire, sarcastically offering him a cup of tea. Djokovic was annoyed because he felt that the chair umpire wasn’t doing enough to control the behavior of the crowd.

“You going to say something or are you just going to sit there and be quiet Would you like a cup of tea?” Djokovic was heard telling the chair umpire.Novak DjokovicNovak Djokovic© Getty Images Sport – Phil Walter

Djokovic saved a match point before falling short to Sinner

Djokovic made a very slow start to the match as he easily lost the first set after dropping his serve in the second and sixth games. The second set was no different as Djokovic again dropped his serve in two games and Sinner pretty routinely went up by two sets on the Serb.

After easily losing the opening two sets, Djokovic faced a break point in the first game of the third set but was able to save it and avoid going down by an early break. As no more break points were seen in the set, the third set had to be resolved in a tie-break.

In the third-set tie-break, Djokovic opened a 4-2 lead before Sinner won four of the next five points to take a 6-5 lead and earn his first match point. Facing a loss, Djokovic won the next three points to save Sinner’s match point and also take the match into a fourth set.Novak Djokovic

But Djokovic’s struggles continued at the start of the fourth set as Sinner was still the one who was dictating points. In the second game of the fourth set, Djokovic managed to save three break points but then he got broken in the fourth game after missing out on three consecutive game points.

Up by two sets to one and having a break in the fourth set, Sinner routinely held on to his serve for the remainder of the match to complete a four-set win over the record 10-time Australian Open champion. Shockingly, Djokovic did not create a single break point opportunity during the match.

Djokovic ‘shocked’ with the level he delivered against Sinner

After the match, Djokovic was pretty blunt and candid when assessing his performance, admitting that he was “shocked” with his play and acknowledging that Sinner was the better player in every aspect.

“He’s deservedly in the finals. He outplayed me completely today,” Djokovic admitted after the match.

“Look, I was, in a way, shocked with my level, you know, in a bad way. There was not much I was doing right in the first two sets (smiling).

“I guess this is one of the worst Grand Slam matches I’ve ever played. At least that I remember. Not a very pleasant feeling playing this way. But at the same time, you know, credit to him for doing everything better than me, you know, in every aspect of the game.

“I tried, I fought. I managed to kind of raise the level a little bit in the third, saved match point, played a good tiebreak. But again, you know, the fourth set, very bad game to lose, you know, 40-Love up on 1-2, and kind of against the wind a little bit. Just overall the performance-wise level of my tennis was, you know, really not great.”Novak DjokovicNovak Djokovic© Getty Images Sport – Julian Finney

For the first time in Djokovic’s career, he failed to register a single break point. When asked about that after the match, Djokovic pointed out how that stat shows perfectly how he played against Sinner.

“Probably that stat says a lot. I mean, first of all, he was serving, he was serving very accurately precise, he was backing his serve very well,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic will now have to wait until at least the French Open to become the first player in tennis history, male or female, to win 25 Grand Slams.
