Steph Curry, WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu to compete in shootout at All-Star weekend

Stephen Curry will be testing his shooting skills against WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu at the NBA’s All-Star Weekend in February. “Stephen vs. Sabrina” will include the sharpshooters in a 3-point contest where each made shot will raise thousands for charity.

Curry is considered by many to be the best shooter in NBA history. Ionescu, who was born in Walnut Creek and attended Miramonte High School in Orinda, won the WNBA 3-point shootout last year. Ionescu plays for the New York Liberty after she had a decorated career at the University of Oregon.

Curry will use NBA basketballs and shoot from the NBA 3-point line while Ionescu will use WNBA balls and shoot from the WNBA line. However, Ionescu made it clear she does not mind shooting from further.

During a game against the Sacramento Kings last week, Curry was mic’d up while he discussed Ionescu’s shooting prowess with Warriors rookie Brandin Podziemski. Ionescu scored 37 points in the WNBA shootout, besting Curry’s best total of 31.

“I think I’ve got to challenge her,” Curry told Podziemski.

Curry’s Eat.Learn.Play. nonprofit and Ionescu’s SI20 Foundation will both receive a donation. In addition, State Farm will donate to the NBA Foundation “to support economic empowerment in the Black community” for each shot that goes in. The donations will be $1,000 for regular 3s, $2,000 for money-ball 3s and $3,000 for deeper 3s.

The competition will happen on NBA All-Star Saturday Night in Indianapolis on Feb. 17.
