Leading coach rates Novak Djokovic’s legendary backhand in a range of key areas

Patrick Mouratoglou has performed a detailed breakdown of the legendary backhand of tennis great Novak Djokovic and scored the shot out of 10 in a number of areas.

Novak Djokovic plays a backhand

The renowned tennis coach gave the Serbian icon’s backhand a perfect 10 rating in four categories and described the stroke as a “masterclass.”

Djokovic’s iconic two-handed backhand has been his most consistent shot since the beginning of his career and is widely considered to be one of the greatest backhands in tennis history.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, Mouratoglou analysed and rated Djokovic’s backhand in 10 different areas delivered an overall score out of 100.

“We very often hear that a player has a good forehand or a bad backhand. I would say that it’s too simple as a statement,” the Frenchman wrote in the post’s caption.

“And that’s why I decided to break down the shots of the champions in many different abilities and read them for you. Here, I’m going to rate Novak Djokovic’s backhand in detail.”

Ability to change direction: 10/10

“Novak is very comfortable directing his backhand crosscourt as much as down the line, and he can decide to do it any time on any type of ball.”

Accuracy: 9/10

“Novak’s backhand is deadly accurate. He plays deep and very close to the sidelines.”

Change of pace: 8/10

“I give him only eight because he’s a player who likes rhythm and he likes when all the balls are played at the same pace.”

Counterpunching: 10/10

“He can play at any speed without ever being late, thanks to his early preparation and his very flexible wrists.”

Ball heaviness: 6/10

“That’s actually his worst grade because Novak’s backhand is flat. His ball is quite comfortable to hit.”

Generating pace: 7/10

“His strength arms in preparation are ideal to counterpunch, but not to create pace when the opponent doesn’t give any.”

Movement on the backhand: 10/10

“Not only is movement of the backhand side is incredible, but also his balance is so great that he can hit a winner even when totally thrown out of the court like the famous passing shot in Wimbledon.”

Solid under stress: 8/10

“If something has to crack under pressure, it would probably be his backhand. Due to the fact that it is a very direct shot with little spin, which means less margin for error.”

Passing shots and lobs: 7/10

“Novak has a very good backhand passing shot thanks to his touch and his accuracy. He doesn’t have the best grade only because he’s not fully aggressive on those shots.”

Touch: 10/10

“Nole has exceptional hands. He loves running on a drop shot because he knows he’s great as these little games.”

Overall: 85/100

“Overall, 85/100. Might sound strange because Novak Djokovic’s backhand is a masterclass.”

Mouratoglou, who coaches at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in France, has worked with several tennis stars, including Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Coco Gauff, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune.
