“Career Mortality” Threatened Stephen Curry into Accelerating Jordan Poole Warriors Exit?

When the Warriors let go of their up-and-coming explosive scorer Jordan Poole, the whole world was shocked. A key contributor to their 2022 title run, Poole’s trade for veteran Chris Paul was not a move that anybody expected. And yet, it happened. The Wizards allowed the 12x All-Star to walk away in exchange for Patrick Baldwin Jr., Ryan Rolins, a 2027 second-round pick, a 2030 first-round pick (top 20 protected), and cash considerations, in addition to Poole.

After the initial outside noise, it was considered to be a great move. The 38-year-old CP3 brought a wealth of experience with him. He was also driven to land a championship at the fag-end of his career. And Stephen Curry and Co. seemed the perfect partners to do it with. But was that all that led to the exit of Jordan Poole.

Stephen Curry in on the Poole trade?

In the latest episode of the HoopsHype podcast, Sr. NBA Insider Michael Scotto and The Athletic’s Anthony Slater discuss the Warriors dynasty. Among other topics, Slater talks about Curry’s outlook on this season. He says that it’s obvious just how frustrated Curry is with the team and the performance. But he also mentions how “career mortality” could be the reason for his apparent frustrations.

Interestingly enough, the Warriors writer for Athletic also mentions how this very reason could have played a part in Poole’s leave-taking. Slater confirms that Steph was privy to the discussions during the trade season. He was also reportedly supportive of the prioritizing of the veterans. So while Stephen Curry is still said to be in his prime, the fact remains that 35-years of age is also a pretty good time for the prime to end.

And Chef Curry is determined to compete now. If that means swapping a potential future star for a roster that Steph loves, then that’s the way to go. Funny enough, a former Warriors star, Jamal Crawford, is also of the same opinion.

Crawford believes the decision came down to “who fit better with Steph”

About a month ago, Jamal Crawford had joined the Broken Play podcast to talk about the trending topic in the NBA. And of course, the Poole-Paul trade was a topic. But the 3x Sixth Man of the Year said, It came down to Draymond or Jordan. And not because of the fight; it came down to who fit better with Steph.

He further elaborates on his point that Dray‘s presence on the court was a necessity. He is called the Warriors’ floor general for a reason! Poole, on the other hand and for the lack of a better choice, is still wet behind the ears. At least for the likes of Stephen Curry.

In all fairness, the young guard had trouble maintaining a consistent record. But Green always showed up when his team needed him the most and delivered. Atleast until the Curry-era is over, the Dubs need Stephen Curry to elevate their game. And if that requires building a cast that can help maximize his potential, then that’s what the team will do.

Even if it requires a few choice sacrifices.
