Mike Tyson is certainly one of the boxing’s greatest fighters. His name is one of the most famous and recognizable in the world. Throughout his amazing career, Tyson has made remarkable achievements and set many records. But there were also many outrageous moments in Tyson’s career which earned him the nickname “The baddest man on the planet”.
Mike Tyson, in his prime, was the most iconic figure in the sport of boxing. He bagged immense accolades in a short span of time, but on the other hand, he was surrounded by a string of controversies that put a blemish on his career. One such controversy that’s registered in the boxing books and fans’ minds is his rift with the Las Vegas Police in 1997.
‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ was all set to contend with his rival Evander Holyfield after the latter defeated him in their first meet. Tyson had a fire in his eyes and the only thing he wanted was to avenge his loss.
Also, being a Mike Tyson boxing event, the atmosphere of the MGM Grand arena was electric. Hence, the police were deployed in extensive numbers to prevent any brawl or adversities that could have popped up.
The fight began well for both the technicians. However, in round 2, ‘The Real Deal’ head-butted Tyson, and the latter suffered a cut above his right eye. Consequently, Tyson bit his ear in a clinch. After an examination, the referee deducted two points from ‘Iron’ Mike’s scorecards.
But there was no stopping for ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ that night, as he repeated the bite. Post that, the referee and the match officials took time and gave the win to Holyfield, thus disqualifying Tyson for his actions.
