NBA – Spurs icon supports Shaq and his comments on Wemby: “Whether you like it or not…
Since his arrival in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama has been the subject of numerous interventions criticized by Shaquille O’Neal, who does not consider him unique. And no offense to many fans, the Diesel would be right according to a Spurs legend.
What if his main rival was not on the floors of the league? Regularly pitted against Chet Holmgren in discussions, Victor Wembanyama hopes to win the race for the Rookie of the Year trophy which pits him against the American. At the same time, he must deal with Shaquille O’Neal’s viral statements concerning him. And suffice to say that the ex-pivot is very talkative about him.
George Gervin validates Shaq’s comments on Wembanyama
While the majority of the NBA community praises Wembanyama’s unique profile, O’Neal regularly takes them the wrong way. So, for the latter, the Frenchman would simply follow in the footsteps… of Bol Bol. The mythical big man is not, however, the only former glory to mention the case of Victor. Recently, it was George Gervin who did the same to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, first of all with humor:
People often ask me if I’ve ever met Victor, and I tell them no, he’s the one who’s never met me! (Laughs)
Although he has so far never been able to speak with the great French hope, Gervin nevertheless closely follows his journey as a Spurs fan and legend. And according to him, bringing him closer to Bol Bol would be anything but heresy:
All joking aside, I really like what I see in him. He has great qualities. He knows how to play, he can shoot… In fact, he’s 2m24 tall and he can do things that we’ve never seen from a player of his size, except Bol Bol.
The Iceman therefore goes in the direction of Shaq and draws a similar portrait of the two young freaks, even if it means alienating some of the observers:
Truth be told, whether you like it or not, you have to mention Bol Bol when you talk about him. They are both the same height (Bol is 2m21, editor’s note), they know how to handle the ball and run, they can shoot 3 points… But I’m proud that Victor is in San Antonio.
That being said, Gervin does not go so far as to say that Wemby and Bol are to be placed on a completely equal footing. According to him, the Frenchy would have a major asset that would allow it to stand out from its peers:
He really knows how to play, you know what I mean? I think that’s a real advantage. You may have all these qualities, if you don’t know how to think and play at the same time… And I think that’s what separates him from the others.
Shaquille O’Neal may have suffered a lot of criticism for his statements about Victor Wembanyama and Bol Bol, but he can clearly count on the support of George Gervin. This, even if the Iceman praises the Frenchman’s supposedly superior basketball IQ.
