The actor is all set to star as Clark Kent a.k.a Superman in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.

James Gunn is all set to reboot the DCU with the first chapter in the new franchise Superman: Legacy. Actor David Corenswet is replacing Henry Cavill as the titular superhero, bringing much disappointment to fans. Cavill was teased to return after a brief cameo in Black Adam, but the plan was scrapped in the wake of Gunn’s new and improved DCU.

Corenswet’s casting has brought in many comparisons to Cavill as many fans notice the similarities between the two actors. The former was also rumored to be bulking up to match the physique of his predecessor, so much so that Gunn was rumored to be concerned that he was getting too big. This rumor, however, has now been debunked.

The development of a comprehensive and clean DC cinematic universe has been marred with mismanagement and bad planning since its inception. The only universe capable of competing with Marvel began with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill in the lead role of Clark Kent a.k.a Superman. The actor’s performance received mixed responses.

Cavill reprised the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. While plans for a Man of Steel sequel were being pushed around, no development occurred. A trickle of good news came when he appeared in a brief cameo in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. However, the DCEU was revamped immediately after.

James Gunn was hired to head the new DC Studios along with Peter Safran. Gunn announced that the universe would undergo a soft reboot to transition from the Snyderverse. The first chapter in this new DCU would be Superman: Legacy, which would focus on a younger Superman. Hence, Cavill would have no role in the film.

Corenswet’s casting was met with immediate backlash and criticism as fans were disappointed with Cavill’s exit. Many also compared the actor’s looks to Cavill and were reportedly disappointed with casting a person who looks similar to the predecessor.

Ever since David Corenswet was cast as Superman, fans of the character were quick to criticize the casting, saying that he was not bulky enough to be right for the titular role. However, these fears have since been squashed as recent photos of the actor see him bulking up for the role. With production halted during the SAG-AFTRA strikes, Corenswet seemed to have enough time to gain muscle.

However, a recent rumor went around saying that director and DC Studios chief James Gunn was worried about David Corenswet gaining too much muscle. It was alleged that the Look Both Ways star reportedly stated that he would not play the role unless he looked like a Tim Sale drawing. The X post which broke the news cited prominent scooper Daniel Richtman as the source.

The rumor has since been debunked by Richtman himself. He responded to the X post with, “Never said it”. So, it seems that Gunn is not worried about Corenswet’s workout regime. The film is scheduled to release in 2025 and Gunn recently mentioned that the script for the film is almost done. He is also working on the pre-production simultaneously. Superman: Legacy also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Sean Gunn, and Nathan Fillion.
