Olivia Rodrigo accidentally ignited social media after claiming a very British thing rarely used by Americans.

A clip of American singer Olivia Rodrigo speaking to Hits Radio has surfaced – and viewers were left shocked when Rodrigo remarked ‘WhatsApp is a very British thing’.

Olivia was invited to Hits Radio to discuss her upcoming album titled ‘GUTS’, but what caught listeners attention was bold claims that Americans don’t use WhatsApp.

She appeared on the breakfast show with hosts Fleur East and James Barr yesterday.

The award-winning singer told the duo: ‘WhatsApp is a very British thing’.

This baffled East, who looked visibly shocked.

The hosts were still bemused, but the star admitted: ‘I’m learning [that] to talk to British people I have to have WhatsApp’

Barr was similarly perplexed, then asked: ‘So you [use] imessage?’

One thing they did agree on was how great Apple’s in house effects are, which offers iPhone users a plethora of designs once triggered by special texts.

Dozens of Twitter users took to the platform to convey their shock, with many calling the star out for being too America-centric, then illustrated how immigrants rely on the app.

One user explained: ‘We use WhatsApp to talk to people outside of America. I use it to talk to family’.

Some users were more shocked than angry: ‘Wait, who DOESN’T use WhatsApp? Do they seriously not?’

Another frustrated user added: ‘We literally NEED this app to connect with friends and families overseas, wdym who still uses it’.

One Twitter even pointed out: ‘No seriously bc Caribbeans use this like Instagram’.

Many Twitter uses commented on the debate but one European user chimed in to Olivia’s defence: ‘Americans would not believe the stranglehold WhatsApp has on Europe’

One user was quick to refute her claims: ‘People in America def use WhatsApp lol. But usually only to talk to friends/family that live in another country’.

Another also expressed shock: ‘I didn’t realise Americans didn’t use WhatsApp’
