The college romance between Kate Middleton and Prince William, Prince of Wales, was unexpectedly revealed by William’s ex-girlfriend during a gathering, according to a new book.
The biography, Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen by Robert Jobson, released on August 6, charts Kate’s journey from a young woman to her current role as a royal icon.
A Modern-Day Fairytale
Like a fairytale in the 21st century, Kate Middleton, now 42, met her prince in 2001 while both were students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Initially friends, their relationship took a turn after Kate dazzled William during a charity fashion show wearing a sheer black lace dress. “Wow, Kate’s hot!” William reportedly exclaimed, marking the beginning of their romantic bond.
By September 2002, the pair had moved in together with two other classmates. While they kept their relationship under wraps, whispers of their romance spread quickly among the student body, Jobson writes.
But their “semi-private” love story on campus came to light during a dinner party attended by mutual friends, including William’s ex-girlfriend, Carly Massy-Birch.
According to Jobson, Massy-Birch inadvertently exposed their budding romance during a game of “Never Have I Ever.” Her revelation reportedly left William fuming.
Jobson draws additional details from royal biographer Katie Nicholl, who elaborated on the evening’s events in her 2013 book, Kate: The Future Queen.
A partygoer recalled the room’s stunned reaction as William glared at Massy-Birch and muttered, “I can’t believe you just said that.”
Despite this awkward encounter, Massy-Birch was one of the few exes invited to the couple’s 2011 wedding, suggesting bygones were left behind.
A Quiet Campus Life
Although their secret was revealed in a dramatic fashion, the couple’s shared life at university didn’t surprise classmates.
“They were often seen walking or cycling to lectures, shopping together at the local Safeway, or enjoying quiet evenings at home listening to R&B or jazz,” Jobson writes.
Winning Hearts Worldwide
In their 2010 engagement interview, William reflected on the start of their romance.
“We moved in as friends, living with a few others, and it blossomed from there,” he said.
Since their 2011 wedding, Kate has captured hearts across the UK and US with her graceful smile, understated elegance, and approachable charm.
Despite her commoner background, Kate radiates a blend of confidence and warmth. Together with William, the duo has become one of the most beloved pairs in the British royal family.
A Future Queen in the Making
As the British monarchy undergoes a transitional phase, Catherine is set to become the first “commoner queen” since Anne Hyde, wife of James II.
With public fascination in the royal family showing no signs of waning, Jobson’s biography provides a vivid portrait of how Kate evolved into the woman who now stands as a cornerstone of modern royalty.
