We need some air.

The Weeknd just released his new single, “Take My Breath,” with accompanying visuals that are as stunning as the title suggests. Directed by Cliqua, the video features our leading man suited up in leather—his signature red jacket is gone—as he makes his way through the intense strobe lights and dancing bodies of a dark disco rave. He encounters a woman decked out in vinyl and chains who hooks him up to an oxygen tank, but later strangles him with her epically long braids.

To No One's Surprise, The Weeknd Delivered Another Banger

Anyone who’s watched The Weeknd’s videos knows that the artist loves to push the envelope, and this dominatrix-inspired work is no exception. The visual effects were even too extreme for theaters. The video was originally supposed to appear in IMAX but was pulled for epilepsy warnings due to “intense strobe lighting.”

“Take My Breath” is just the first taste we have of The Weeknd’s next musical era, which follows his acclaimed 2020 album, After HoursGQ reported earlier this week that the singer’s upcoming project is “packed with party records,” so expect more hits like this one on the way. “It’s the album I’ve always wanted to make,” The Weeknd told the magazine.

He also added that he won’t be measuring the success of this release through numbers or awards (he’ll be boycotting the Grammys anyway). “What makes any of my albums a successful album, especially this one, is me putting it out and getting excited to make the next one,” he said. “So the excitement to make the next project means that this one was successful to me. I want to do this forever. And even if I start getting into different mediums and different types of expressions, music will be right there. I’m not going to step away from it.”
